Getting started on the double roller mod on my rear wheel. help! what is the trick getting the first bearing out? which bearing should be taken out first? In shop talk article, sounds like the left is the one to take out first, but it has the farthest to be pushed out?..will the inner spacer "push" out of the way completely? using a punch or rod and hitting on only a small area of the bearing seems like asking for trouble..I just didnt want to break something because I didnt ask for help and Inzane is fast approaching...thanks

If you are removing both bearings I would take the single row (left) out first as it has less surface retaining it and should there fore come out easier, a long punch through the axle hole with the spacer moved out of the way and a big hammer should do the trick, throw the removed bearing away. The spacer won't push out of the way completely ( if I remember properly) but will give you enough room to work. Mine came out easiely, but if yours are stubborn, use a heat gun to heat the area of the wheel around the bearing.

Im not sure what I am not doing properly but my spacer wont give me enough room to get a punch on it..i get about an 1/8 of an inch and punch just slips off when I try to tap it

Thanks, Skinhead and Trout dude..I have the left bearing out now..I put some heat to it and in the process pretty much knew I had killed the bearing, I couldn't, not take it out..so a few choice words and a bigger hammer..I was able get just enough room to get my homemade bearing puller in and the left one came out...now I can see whats in there, I am going to turn a shaft down tomorrow at work that will fit the right side bearing and hopefully it wont be too much to get it out..thanks for your support

It is very doubtful that a "removed" bearing would be any good.
That's the jest of a remark someone made regarding wheel bearings.
"Why remove a proven good (old) bearing and replace it with an unknown and unproven (new) bearing."
Simple concept, difficult to accept tho......

Ricky-D, I also wondered that one. My 16 year old Grandson said it best. "Monkey see, Monkey do". Had a rear bearing go out at 99,276 miles. Replaced them and still running at 243K. Wheel now in the a garage laying in a dark corner. I wouldn't hesitate to just slap it back on a bike & go. MGM, is now a trike so no real worries on an independent rear end.

Thanks Riky-D no no problems with the bearings change, it s the large spacer before the internal O ring .seems as if mine is not going anywhere and the bearing in there is great. so all I really want is to clean and change the O ring without having to buy new parts. Seems the same as changing the inner seal on a caliper why would the large ring have to move? thanks

Yes, after thumbing the crap out of bearings that did seem perfectly fine when I hammered them out, I am sure they wouldn't be worth much. And as to the monkey see and do as someone else put it..I suppose so.. but for a few minutes of aggravation of getting the first bearing to move just enough to get my bearing puller on it the mod when very well. And this monkey likes having a bearing of nearly double the size and the same as the opposite side in there. It just seemed like thing to do as I put my darkside tire and hitch on too. When all said and done, I enjoyed having had the experience of doing it

When you install the new bearings, DO NOT FORGET TO INSTALL THE SPACER BEFORE INSTALLING THE SECOND BEARING!!! (not that anyone has ever done this)
Also, putting the bearings in the freezer overnight, and removing them JUST prior to installing will make installation easier.
