Ok... I got it cured... I think.

After installing the pingle (vacuum activated) petcock I had in my pile of parts... and still seing no improvement.

After about 5/8 of a tank of fuel and a whole 20 oz bottle of techron, and another 40 or so miles with ANOTHER 20 oz bottle of Techron added to the remaining 3/8 tank of fuel... a buddy of mine borrowed the bike on Friday to put some more miles on her for me.  He put in fresh new Shell V-Power premium fuel, and it started acting a lot better according to him.  He did a lot of 40 mph to 95 mph in 5th gear WOT runs, and sycled the choke on/off a bunch of times for 15 seconds at a time.

I rode it yesterday a little... 10 miles or so... and it's A LOT better.  Still not PERFECT, but close... and I believe it'll get better with some additional miles.

I am still planning to desmog.  Both bikes I think.

I think we're good to go.  I'll try to ride the Ugly Sister (my IS  Wink Lips Sealed Roll Eyes ) to work a couple days this week instead of the Standard.

Thanks everyone for the input!

Glad it's running better, Jabba. As of a few months ago, I'm also a Techron convert. Wow, your buddy must be a true friend. Who the Hell can afford Shell Premium gas these days?!

My buddy borrowed my IS a few times for trips to Cincinnati from Indy.

His wife LOVED it so much she made him buy one!  He doesn't really like it I don't think.  I offered him $4000 for his the other day and he actually asked his wife if it was ok.

And no... I would NOT screw him over like that.

That's what my GTI drinks. Around here all gas is within 1 or 2 cents of one another anyway, so just pick your poison.

Glad you got it, I think the cycling of the choke is the secret, that's what worked on a 98 standard I bought a few years ago.  Hoser  cooldude

It is definitely better.  It's still a little rough... and not really running with typical Valk smoothness.  But as we all know... that standard is pretty high.

I think we're there.  I may continue to treat with reasonable doses of Techron for a couple more tanks of fuel... but all seems to be in order.

I think the secret to a smooth running bike is to ride it more.
when I got my 98 Tourer in 2008 from my Dad it ran a little rough because he let it sit in the garage for over a year.

I got it home and read up on seafoam in the tank and I found I had to replace the vacuum tubes for the pair valve. I'm keeping it stock.

barring bad weather, I ride it everyday to work and it runs really smooth. After a short sitting spell this winter, I'm putting techron in the tank today - 12ozs- to clean out any ethanol rubbish that may have built up.

keep on riding that Valkyrie! it will smooth out!  cooldude

I just like my Standard more.  Therefore I ride it more.  Therefore... the IS sat longer this year than in the past...  and badaBOOM... here we are.  ??? Roll Eyes

Yeah I know... I need to ride them both... but when you have THIS:

Who wants to ride this?:

No offense intended to those of you that PREFER Interstates...  I have both... and REALLY like the Standard better.

My SO likes the IS better.  Hence the REASON that I have two.  One is MINE, one is HERS, I just pilot the ugly one for her.   cooldude Wink Wink Grin 2funny

Jabba, I prefer the supervalk IS to the full size IS......... 80K to 48K worth.  But I do pull the other out and ride it for two months several times a year.  I swap for months at a time, not days, there is a little work in getting to the inside bike... crammed/shimmed up against the wall of my shed.

Who wants to ride this?    You talking the green and silver, or the pink?   2funny  Apologies if pink is related to you.

BTW, you're looking reasonably thin there buddy.   cooldude

Yeah man... the woman in pink is my wonderful wife.  But no offense taken.  Thanks about the weight loss comment.  I have been working hard at it.  I seem to be stuck at about 295.  I guess I am just going to hover here for a while, and get my body comfortable at THIS weight, and make a push to lose some more later in the year.  My intermediate goal was 280.  Eventually I'd like to get down to 260.

I told my wife when we bought the IS, if she told me to sell it... I would in a heart beat.  But the Blue bike is staying.  I stick to that.  Now that the IS is running in what I consider an acceptable manner... I rode "Blue" to work today, and my world is a better place for it.   2funny

I don't really act my age on either of them... but I do behave better on the IS when the SO is on board.  They tend to be active "governors" don't they?

Well just having her on the back puts it in my head to not be too crazy...and I hardly ride solo..she loves to ride..but we made a deal when she wanted the Interstate. the standard wasn't leaving and it wasn't going to sit all the time..so we sorta take turns on them...the interstate was to be our trip bike, more or less..and my wife doesnt mind when I dont act my age..she just doesn't like when I practice my hard stops...but I remind her..if I ever need to, I wont be able to let you know ( no intercom on my standard)
