I have a real loud whine at about 55 mph. I know the square cut gears do this but never noticed
it as much but it has been real loud lately. It starts at around 35 then at 55 and just after 65.
New oil change with 20-50 mobil 1 m/c oil, have a Dunlap 404D rear on the front @ 42 lb.
even tried 35 lbs. The tire made some noise when new but not like this. It does not do it
as much when i'm in a turn. Could this be the bearings, tranny, tire or what.?
Any help on this would welcomed. Thanks in advance. Bill

Not likely the trans. Could be rear bearing, or, belt tensioner. Does it change pitch with engine RPM? Simply speed induced? How about what gear? Can you tell from what end of the bike the noise is coming from? Need a little more info.  |

Did you replace the Front Wheel Bearings when you Installed the New Front Tire? It Could also be a Front or Rear wheel Bearing. I have had this same thing happen before and it turned out to be a Wheel Bearing once on the Front and another time on The Rear. I believe mine was caused from Too many Trips to the Car Wash and getting Pressurized water in the Bearings. Hope you get it figured out soon.

All the noise seems to be coming from the front kinda like a hollow sound. No I did not replace
the bearnings with new tire. The right side timing belt seems to have more play than the left.
It is quite at any other speed than 35-55 and just past 65, at 55 I can hear it in 4th gear at 75 it is just fine. I don't hear it as much in turns. Thanks for the input. Thinking of replacing the belts,
is this hard to do and how do you adjust the belt for now? Thanks again.

Pulled the front wheel and the tire has some cupping but the bearings are good. I think I should have mounted the 404 rear up front backwards. Going to replace the timing belts this week also. Thanks Bill. |

When you change belts, remove the tensioners and inspect the bearings in the tensioners. ANY side movement or rough feel is the sign of a bad bearing. Also, have you looked at the rear bearings, and done the rear maintenance in a while?

my whine started at 95+ on the turnpike heading for the keys last summer. i pulled over and dropped her off in the middle of no place west of Miami, it was 93 degrees and no shade. little did i know the next place to turn around and come back for her was 20 plus miles down the road. I never hear that whine when she rides with me now.

I get that, but just turn up the stereo . Really, though; if it gets worse while in a curve it could be the front tire. If not, bear in mind that the tranny makes the most noise around 50-55 MPH; especially if you're due for a oil change like I am... Fred. |

When you get to the speed that you have the noise, pull in the clutch and let the engine idle down while coasting at speed. If the noise is still there, it is possibly bearing/u-joint/pumpkin related. If it goes away, you're in to a whole new ball game  |

I have always found if you use a rear tire in front
you need to mount it backwards.
You can fine info on the wing board, they do this on
their trikes.

Thanks for all the input guys. The whining stopped and I'm not sure what it was. New front m/c tire 404, new rear bearings as the small one felt bad, new timing belts did this because of the age only and they were in good shape. Lubed the splines so all is good now. I think it was a combo of the cupped tire and the bearing. And i do love cheese Dave. Hope to see ya at Inzane.  |

That D404 is a bias tire, it should be inflated to 35 or so, and the cupping and noise will stop. Happened to MP on the way to Ohio last week. 32 to 36 is the recommended pressure by Dunlop. Hoser
