Is the side stand down? She won't start in gear if the stand is down. If up, then check the clutch lever for correct movement and/or wear of bushing. You should hear a slight but distinct "click" when you pull the clutch lever in.

Most likely: Clutch lever needs to be replaced. The pivot hole that the bolt goes through wears into an oval shape so that when you pull in the lever, the tab that pushes the switch doesn't push it in far enough. Wiggle the end of the lever up and down. IIRC, a new lever will allow about 1/16" of movement. The lever that I replaced had more like 1/4" of movement.
Next most likely: Switch at clutch lever needs fixing/replacing.

+1. If play at the pivot bushing is not the problem check the face of the lever where it contacts the push rod for the clutch master cylinder. Sometimes this wears a small divot that will prevent the lever from activating the switch. You should be able to hear the swith "click" when you pull in the lever. It's also easy to check with a mutlimeter.

Be sure bike is in neutral and bypass the switch pull clutch lever in and try to start. If it starts it is the switch. Just do this for a test do not ride bike in this condition. Sometimes just removing the switch and spraying some contact cleaner will do the trick. You can also us a meter to check switch for operation probably a safer option.

Unless it's the lever.

How do you bypass the switch?????
Pull the small wires off the back of it CAREFULLY....they're small, then put a short jumper between them. Or, it's held in place with a single small bolt....remove that and the switch comes off. Another possibility; have you replaced the grips recently? If the new ones are too thick it prevents the clutch handle from pulling far enough to activate that switch.

By that I assume you put your ear close to the area of the switch and squeezed the handle to see if the switch is being actuated. With normal hearing, you don't have to do that...you can hear it click while sitting on the bike. A sign of the times are such that many riders around 45 yrs. old or younger can't hear it. However, if you squeezed the handle and heard the switch click then we can assume the bushing in the handle pivot is OK. If you removed the small wires and used an ohm meter to test for continuity at the wire attachment posts when squeezing the handle and it showed full needle deflection, then we can assume the switch is OK. I would next use the ohm meter and test each wire from there to the frame.
