I see many seem to like the airwings. I have never used them. What is the advantage? Direct airflow to you? Direct airflow away from you? Does this re-direct engine heat? Keep you warm in colder climates? I thought it was a Wing Thing? ???

well, before i got mine i didn't know if i would like 'em so here's my thoughts.
they deflect the air away when it's cold, and "pool" the engine heat around your legs. when it's hot you can turn them to catch air and divert it directly onto your legs. when it's raining you don't even get wet when they're closed.
i love mine.

There were some on my bike when I bought it. I learned one of life's lessons on the way to Tucumcari...... Don't try to adjust the airwing with your foot while crusing down the highway..... snapped that puppy right off... Even Duct Tape couldn't fix that one.... no more airwings for me

IMHO or 2C worth They are one of the best things I have added for my comfort. Directs airflow around you on hot days and keeps the air from you (Somewhat) on colder days. or in the mornings. It is a definite change with them. SO likes them better than me.

I have the Bakers on my I/S and yes they work as advertised. However Honda had a set of wings that atached to the I/S pods that were cheaper, did virtually the same thing, were less intrusive, and did not cause the pods to crack. And they are still available for the I/S models.
Sometimes different is better.

No one has yet mentioned one of their most valuable intended uses IMO, which is to greatly reduce wind buffeting to both you and your passenger. In the summer heat you can turn the bottoms out to direct cooler air towards yourself and or passenger and leave the tops to reduce buffeting to the chest and head area. I have taken them off a few times to see if I can live without them, cuz I'm not particularily enamoured by the looks of them (FUGLY), But I always end up putting them back on cuz they work (form follows funtion I suppose)

but they really cut down on head buffeting. If you don't have a windshield, they probably will not help you. They are also good for redirecting air.

Judd/Thunderbolt...
Interesting statement about them reducing buffeting, quite frankly I never used mine enough to find out. Are you guys able to get away with using a shorter windshield if you have the Airwings?

On a Std or Tour the bakers have two wings. Summer close the top and open the bottom, does two things, directs air into your body and stops the buffeting. Interstate only have one wing with an inner air dam that I remove for summer riding. Also they are useful when you get caught in the rain. Ive been using them since 98 when I bought my first Valk, and even though some dont like the way they look, I believe anything that is this functional is beautiful.

JimL...............I have a Batwing with an 8" shield which is a bit shorter than the stock shield and the wings still significantly reduce buffeting.

Thanks Judd...you guessed exactly the reason why I asked the question, I was wondering if they would help with the short windshield on the batwing!!

Check with HDL or at least a knowledgable Honda dealer.
Again,...and I stress this,....the Honda Interstate Pod Deflectors are still available.

I inherited a set when we got Kim's Valk last year {she didn't want them , I GLADLY put them on my bike} & right away I loved the way they kept me warmer in the cold. Those of you that know me understand how much I HATE the cold. Biggest surprise to me was the lack of wind noise & buffeting around my head when closed. I've not tried the tops closed/bottoms open thing yet.... sounds like a plan! I must agree on the FUGLY thing too, but at least the brackets are chrome!

I have both. The radiator deflectors and the Bakers. My I/S is a 2000, bought in March of 2000. During the first summer I got the radiator deflectors because I noticed that the faster you rode, the more the heat coming out of the pods would get closer to my legs until at interstate speeds when the hot air then touched my legs and then came straight up into the cockpit area. Those deflectors helped to push the hot air outwards. When it got colder. I could adjust them to get the hot air to come up where i wanted it. Even with those it was still too hot, so...I'm at the 2001 VOAi ride-in in La Crosse, WI. Talked to Mr. Baker himself about his product. He put them on and told me to go for a ride and if I didn't like them, he would take them off and give me a refund. It was very hot that weekend and I didn't get 3 blocks before I decided I wouldn't be returning them. Both sets of deflectors work well with each other. I also have Hondaline fork deflectors. When it rains, I hardly get wet.

I have a question for the group. My right set seems to be mounted an inch or so further back on the bike than the left, relative to the engine and bars??? Everything looks like a standard bracket and bolt attachment and the clearance to the turn signals is about even. Am I missing something?
I inherited my baker wings also. Work great in summer to cool off my legs, keep me warmer in the cold. My legs are about two inches too long to stay completely dry in the rain. I have the smoked plastic and they have a polished stainless steel cover with the dragon logo. The extra bling goies well with my bike. If I were doing it I might not have done the dragon thing, but I can't bring my self to take any chrome OFF my bike.
I do need to replace one of the plastic pieces which has cracked. Low priority since it cant be seen due to the metal covers. Has any one found a better alternative than the Baker replacements which are over $100 for the set.

I became re-enthused about the air wings when reading the posts so on the 4th, I ordered a set for my Tourer from HDL. Called them Monday to see if I'd get them before I left for Inzane. didn't get a promised callback (no biggie) so I called today and found out they're on back order, min 1 wk before shipping. Normally no prob but I'd like to use them on the ride. Called Baker air wings, will ship today or Wed them delivered in3-4 days. "ATS what I'm talkin about!!" Would've used Hal, just a time thing this go-round.
