I am in process of changing back to a C/T and I noticed very clearly today exactly how much weight was used on my Avon Cobra rear tire.

A grand total of 2.5 ounces. yep a total of 10 1/4ounce flat stick on weights. Seems like a lot too me.

Would that much weight bother you or make you question the tire or the installation of said tire? keeping in mind this is a Motorcycle tire.

I think I will try and static balance the rim before I get the new tire mounted maybe a make a mark on the heavy side and see how that matches up when the tire is installed.

when a bike tire is new the is a small red ring inked on the side of the tire this is the lightest spot of the tire and should always be mounted at the valve stem. twice i have made dealers tear down the bike and remount the tire, now i just do it myself.

Thanks, I have seen those marks on Bike tires.
But can't remember ever seeing them on Car tires and this time that's what I am going to be mounting.

I used ride on with this last tire and tire smoothness was great but the tire wore poorly not at all blaming the ride on product. Now when I pulled the tire I found 95+% of the ride on had dried up and couldn't have been offering any balancing effect or probably not any leak sealing properties. I will try and get a picture of what the old tire looks like and post for your viewing pleasure.

The Honda service manual has the max recommended balancing weight at 60 grams...2.1 ounces.

I installed Centra-matics on my front tire. It is balanced every revolution it makes, and it doesn't care which brand tire is mounted, no weights involved just ride!

Also as i remember on some m/c tires there was a white dot on sidewall to line up with valve stem. Havent seen the red ring.

As I have posted before, my Goodyear TTs have used the least amount of weight to balance on a pro machine balancer than any bike tire I ever had.  A single small wt. once, and two the next time.
I suspect most good car tires will be similar.

My guy has balanced a tire with the dot at the valve stem, found it took too many wts, and tore it off and redid it with the dot 180* on the other side with better (less wts) results.

Dyna beads are for balancing, Ride on is for tire leaks.  They do NOT work together. Hoser

Just wondering why some of you assume the heavy spot on the rim is at the valve stem???? It might be, it might not. The best way to tell is like Fordmano suggests he might do, spin the rim by itself on the static balancer. I use two 4x4 posts  with bearings at the top. I then lay the axle with the rim on top of them. Once you find the heavy spot of the rim. Mark it. Some tires are marked with a yellow spot. If so, put the yellow spot even with the marked heavy spot of the rim. This will require the least amount of weights possible for that combo. If the tire isn't marked with the yellow spot, you might have to mount the tire(I use silicone) and then rotate the tire on the rim(before airing it up) till the tire no longer falls to the same heavy spot when the rim is rotated and left to settle in.

I used the methods above and then just use dyna beads. It works well and the tires require no weights at all.

And for what it's worth, my rim's heavy spot is quite a bit aways from the valve stem-maybe 30-40 degrees away.

I would question the install. Balancing with Dyna Beads has worked well for me.

Hey fordmano. you are right, 2.5 oz is too much... check your wheel by itself like you are thinking, then start over with the new tire.

Well,,,,,,, The new tire showed up today and of course I got overly excited and did not spin the rim without the tire installed. Just wiped the rim off a bit more and headed to my regular tire guy not a M/C specific shop at all. Actually they NEVER work on bike stuff. But they installed this C/T on my M/C rim for me since I have been shopping there for just about 33 years now. No charge, but they also couldn't balance it for me either.

Just for clarity since I noticed it was mentioned the different usage for Ride-On and DynaBeads. I was only running Ride-On and if you check their site they specifically say does both dynamically balances and stops leaks.

And that was your Tire PORN for the day.... Evil Evil

So I am actively searching for Dyna-Beads locally so I can install by Saturday evening and try it out on the way to work that night. If I can't find any by Saturday afternoon then off to the bike shop for them to spin balance it....

Dyna Beads is only for balance.

Ride-On is for punctures and balance... maybe not as good at balance as beads, but car tires may be so close to perfectly uniform it may be enough.  But you cannot use both.... MESS!

Yeah nice tire, but you are still going without knowing what the situation is,,,,,,,,,,,  do a static balance to at least get in the ballpark and make sure there is not a gross out of balance situation.......  you had too much weight before to make it come out, I would want to investigate to make sure I was not passing along the disease.

I ran two rear Avons to the cords that didn't require any weight. Just as smooth as any tire I ever had. When I went to the car tire, I used Ride On, just to make sure it was balanced. cooldude

I did take a gander at static balancing the entire package, that's why I posted showing the old milk crates and the axle installed. I know that is not the optimum way to do this but we do what we have to some times, Right? It did not matter what speed I spun the tire or what direction it always came up at a different random position so it might be close. I will be going over to cyclegear tomorrow afternoon and see if they have enough Ride-On in stock for this application if they don't then I guess I walk across the parking lot to the Harley Stealership and pick up Dyna-Beads this time. I like the idea in principal of the Ride-On but I did not like seeing that it was completely dried out and crusty in the tire and heavily stuck to the rim itself...
Looks like from each products website, my amount for this application should be about:
Ride-On; 16oz $14.95 per 8oz bottle = about $32.44  Shocked
Dyna-Bead; 3oz $12.99 per 3oz package  = about $14.09  ???

Maybe I will try Harley dealer first and see if they are instock?

Fordmano, at Loves truck stops they will sell you counteract brand beads. I believe I bought 20 oz. bag for about $12. They have it in the tire changing shop not in the store. You just get the beads though not an applicator but its easy enough to make one out of a bottle and hose.

Thanks, "meathead".

I am not anywhere close to any truck stop, so it will cost me more in fuel than the difference to run over to the Harley dealer.  I heard it was a bit WARM around your neighborhood yesterday, friend near Phoenix said forecast was 126 degrees at Lake Havasu.

And here she is fitted to the bike, another 20-30 minutes and I can go home get some sleep than run over to Harley and spend some dollars.... And wrap this project up, hoping to ride into work this evening. That sure would be nice since I have been off the bike for over 2 weeks now I think.

Nothing is tightened up yet had to leave for work before I could finish.

Oh yeah, my daily commute is 84 miles round trip, when I left work yesterday it was 125 deg. I`m taking the car today my wife thinks I`m gonna die in this heat! I took a couple pics yesterday to post my commute but I haven`t  figured how to post them yet.

Dang Matt just in time for the heat wave.  Should he a nice ride.  Hope it works out. After picking up the screw in San Diego I am thinking of using ride-on.  Wonder why it dried up, haven't heard that on the vtx forum.

I hope you polished that rim real good before you mounted it hah.  Have a safe ride, Monday is supposed to be hot again lets ride!
