Finally got off my tucas, and pulled the rear wheel for service and a new tire. Unfortunately, the meds for my staff infection affect me working outside and in the sun, but I did get the wheel off, and the original rear brake lines removed. My drive shaft and U-joint look perfect..however I can't say the same for the final drive and the flange. I'm down about 50% on the splines. They were still well lubed, which is good. I had expected something like this when I had to fix the left bearing about 8K ago. It had showed more wear in 1k, than the previous 20. I do have an extra final drive and spline, but I don't have a Ujoint boot. Mine was torn in two places. So now I've got to order a boot. If the local Honda shop doesn't have a boot, then I get to wait a week for another one with my fat lady stripped naked in the driveway and temps will be 100+ for the next two or three days.

Hmm, things seem to be wearing too quickly ? But everything is still nice and slippery and greasy ? Did you change grease or some such thing ? Did you still leave the 4 rear drive nuts loose when snugging up the axle and tighten them last ?

Also, I wonder about the condition of the wheel dampers, thrust washer and if you have been using Moly paste in your lube??
Like you said , more wear in 1 K than the previous 20,,,,, something changed,,,, surely need to identify it before slapping the new final on her.

The larger amount of wear was from the bearing going bad and once it chewed up the first 20-30%, I think it just set the tone for the next 9K. I am indeed using the moly with my grease, and doing the 4 FD bolts as my last step. I may not have slathered a ton of it on but everything has grease on it, without slinging it everywhere. After the may neighbors final drive going out within a few K of Stealer Maintenance, I've been pretty paranoid about checking things. I have picked up some Green Grease that others have said works well and will use it on this maintenance. I ordered a new boot from HDL, just hope it gets here before I need to head out for Inzane.

When I previously replaced the left hand bearing what I had on hand was an ALL Balls, chinese bearing. Although the bearing felt fine, I decided to hit the local bearing supply and get a repacement. Got an SKF, made in Austria. Hope it's a good one. The inner bearing is smooth as glass, Gary's dampers show no wear at all.

The SKF is a good bearing with a pretty good rep,,, probably was a good idea to change it out while you were in there.
"The larger amount of wear was from the bearing going bad and once it chewed up the first 20-30%, I think it just set the tone for the next 9K." Well this ought to get you in good shape for the next 20K then.... I hope everything comes together just fine to get you out the door on time..
I can vouch for the wing spline repair if you decide to repair your other drive.

I've been advertising for a wing rear end for the last six months. Had one guy say he had one in storage, but had just moved and was buried in his storage shed. That was a month ago and I haven't heard from him.

I found mine on eBay with pretty good pictures of the splines.. When I got it, they were perfect... About $60 with shipping,,,, I took a chance by not seeing it first hand, but it worked out.

I got the new to me final drive, flange and the driveshaft, a replacement boot, an SKF left hand bearing, 6 magnets and pickup coil for the Rostra all installed. Not to mention, a new 205/60/16 Discount tire (Champiro GT Radial) all on the bike and took it out for a test run today. Damn, I love this tire. While it's not directional like my old CT it has a far more rounded profile and shows almost none of the bad handling characteristics of the old tire. Didn't notice any tar snake wobble or a tendency to track ruts in the road any more than a regular bike tire. Made me a happy happy camper...........UNTIL............I stopped for lunch......pulled in the parking lot and couldn't back the bike up to park it. Had to drive it around and into the spot. Front brakes where hot hot hot and I couldn't move the brake lever at all. After eating and giving the brakes a chance to cool off, things were back to normal, with some actual lever movement and no dragging. Made it back home ok, but the lever movement was getting really stiff again.
My plans had been to begin the necessary dismantle of the bike for the Rostra install for my trip to WI......So I guess I get to pull the front brakes and see if I can't clean up the pistions. Hate to touch anything without any parts on hand and this late in the game,,,,but dad burn it,,,,I wanna get to my FIRST Inzane. If I need to get any parts I'll be riding the wing or the beemer...
