I've owned my '97 Tourer for fourteen years, and I can't remember feeling the final drive during/after a ride.... until a few days ago. The air temp that day was in the high 90's and we had spent the afternoon at highway speeds. The pumpkin was very warm to the touch. That sound about right? (Within the past month, I changed the final drive oil.. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-90)

being warm to fairly hot to the touch is not out of line . The entire driveline will pass heat from part to part , its all steel . Even the rear wheel will be warm to a slight degree .

Bugslayer, I've got a IR Thermometer & I've used it to check the temp on the pumpkin before...I can't remember the readings but next time I go for a good ride I'll check it...I just remember thinking that it got hot...I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-90 too....

Too hot to hold your hand on, not hot enough to do burn damage if you touch it briefly.

From the replies, it sounds like all is good. When I checked it, it was close to (if not over) 100* outside.... and we had gone probably close to 100 miles. I could hold my hand on it for two or three seconds before I had to move it. Thanks !

Daniel, I'm thinking it was something like 290 degrees. I checked it right after I did my last final drive service...wish I had checked it before... What Daniel descibed is in the range of 150 F.

Just got home tonight & checked mine...the ambient temperature outside was 70 degrees & the drive shaft housing where it bolts to the pumpkin was the hottest spot 135 degrees.

Thanks for the info! We have a lazer thermometer at work. I'll see if I can get my hands on it.

Since I switched to the Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90 the pumpkin is noticeably cooler to the touch. I've read reports of up to 30 degrees cooler than non-synthetic 80W.
I use the Mobil1 in both my wife's VTX and my Triumph Rocket 3...good stuff.

Did another test today...rode 45 minutes between about 70 mph..outside temp 85 degrees...Stop a gas station & checked temp...153 at its hottest point where the final drive housing connects to the pumpkin...

Cool... Thanks for the info.
I'm planning on getting out Saturday after work. If I can borrow the lazer thermometer from work, I'll check mine.
