WHY AMERICA 'S ECONOMY FELL OFF THE CLIFF

Scanner started the day early having set his

ALARM CLOCK (MADE IN JAPAN )

for 6 am.

While his

COFFEEPOT (MADE IN CHINA )

was perking, he shaved with his

ELECTRIC RAZOR (MADE IN HONG KONG )

He put on a

DRESS SHIRT (MADE IN SRI LANKA ),

DESIGNER JEANS (MADE IN SINGAPORE )

and

TENNIS SHOES (MADE IN KOREA )

After cooking his breakfast in his new

ELECTRIC SKILLET (MADE IN INDIA )

he sat down with his

CALCULATOR (MADE IN MEXICO )

to see how much he could spend today. After setting his

WATCH (MADE IN TAIWAN )

to the

RADIO (MADE IN INDIA )

he got in his

CAR (MADE IN GERMANY )

filled it with

GAS (from Saudi Arabia )

and continued his search

for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his

COMPUTER (MADE IN MALAYSIA ),

Scanner decided to relax for a while.

He put on his

SANDALS (MADE IN BRAZIL ),

poured himself a glass of

WINE (MADE IN FRANCE )

and turned on his

TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ),

and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in America and now he's hoping he can get help from a

PRESIDENT MADE IN KENYA

Details, details, this was for fun. It was sent to me in an e-mail with my name inserted. Nafta screwed us and I don't care how many Republicans or how many Democrats voted for it the American worker was sold down the river.

I remember that night...of the three candidates that stood on stage, some guy with big ears from the Dallas-Fort Worth area was warning about a "great sucking sound" as jobs flowed south of the border.

I agree!  NAFTA ain't working to  our benefit.

However, I'm looking forward to the Cap and Tax---------Err ,Cap and Trade bill being passed.  We will set a shining example for the world to follow us into Green.

Meanwhile, we will shell out lots more green to pay for it, while the rest of the world will capitalize on being able to make still more goods cheaper than we can so they can to sell back to us.

You know!  This economy thing (cause & effect) is so easily figured out by the common man on the street in America, while the elected officials and the bureaucrats of this country still have their heads immersed in the dark.  Hummm!  Now where could that be?   Wink

Ya know... it's really a shame that the people who really know how to run the government and the economy are all out there driving taxis, working construction, waiting tables, driving trucks, ranching and farming... and... all the rest.  How ever did they miss their true calling?   laugh

Let me first say that the folks that are out there driving taxis, working construction, waiting tables, driving trucks, ranching and farming are the real backbone of America.  They don't sit around on their lazy ass all day and blame someone else for their problems and demand from the government what they are too lazy to do for themselves.  I identify with these "construction workers and truck drivers" and I salute them.

I am one of those fortunate individuals that started out in life in the eastern Kentucky coal fields with less than nothing, the only thing I truly had going for me was God given cognitive ability, and a mother who would not accept failure on my part....regardless of the circumstances I born into.  I worked these jobs you referred to during high school and all the way through college.  I worked hard and quite frankly been very lucky during my career; without going into the boring details of what I do and who I do it for, suffice to say I am confident that I can look any "self proclaimed intellectual on this board" straight in the eye without the least bit of intimidation.  I mention this not to boast but simply point out that hard work is the solution to peoples problems, not the government.  The only role the government needs to play is to make education available to those who legitimately want to pursue it.

While you and I might possibly agree that most of these folks may not be the best architects of our government and our economy, I would suggest that many of the folks who have spent their life in academia are equally unqualified (yes I am thinking of folks like Harvard professor Robert Reich and other "intellectuals" of his ilk).

Our founding fathers provided a blueprint for government that while not perfect, has proven to be pretty darn good compared to all the rest.  Up until recently that blueprint has been small government that "works for the people" rather than the other way around.  People are responsible for their own success through hard work, sacrifice and investment in education.

Ohhhh... I don't think I know how to run the government so instead I vote for people who I think can run the government.  I watched the Republiclowns f*ck things up badly for 8 years.  Jury is out on the Democrats... but they'll be hard pressed to do worse than the GOP idiots currently in Congress, the party of no.  No solutions, no plan, no alternative... just gripe.

PS:  Why am I 'shielded'?  I am an American citizen.  I pay American taxes (and Singapore tax, thanks to the fact that the US is one of the few countries in the world without tax treaties to prevent double taxation).  I've got property in the US.  I've got most of my investments in the US.  My family is in the US.  So... how am I 'shielded'?

It's just the opposite, actually.  I'm overseas so you can guarantee all my emails are monitored.  Same for my bank accounts... no privacy because I am oversees and _could_ launder money... see... already guilty so I must be monitored.  It's not Singapore that is monitoring me, it is my own gottdamn government... just because I live overseas.

Oh well... enough of the rant for now.

I wish you and I could drink a beer and have a discussion/debate/argument.  My work life started with pumping gas, hard manual labor, building houses, and more.  I was approached once by a street bum who said, "You don't know what it's like to be poor."  I said, oh yes I do... that's why I work for a living.  I went to college when I was 43.  I graduated when I was 47.  You can do what you want to do it you will work for it.

And while I can sympathize with your views on 'academics'... having been exposed to far too many of them... don't discount education or those who have seen both sides of the coin.  I am at times appalled by the people on this board who denigrate education... like 'joe sixpack' really could run the country.  We need the best... and that is a combination of experience and education... and parenthetically... that is why Obama will be great for the US... a poor ass, single mother kid, that did get a best education.

So, we have something in common, and some things not in common... a good mix for a friendly debate.

Since this is a Valkyrie message board I know we share a common interest. Scanner and I stumbled upon another issue we can agree on. You may be a tougher nut to crack, however you came close here even though you were being sarcastic. A politicians main job is to get re-elected while telling us what we want to hear and blame the "other side" when nothing positive happens, all the while never having to give a direct answer to a direct question.

I'm glad to hear you don't think you could "run" the government as I agree with you on that point. Why didn't you include lawyers in your list? You know, education and status haven't served us all that well for the last 20-30 years. and I think that covers both parties. I don't believe any of those officials were dumb but they did not serve the people effectively. I would not dismiss anyone because of their occupation. The one rule I would favor would be to forbid anyone with a law degree to hold public office. I don't dislike lawyers as a group. It just seems the bad apples turn up in public office.

Eagle I have to say that it would be an enjoyable beer!  I suspect that many of our core beliefs would remain intact, but it would be an interesting (and probably at times a "spirited") discussion for sure!!

Eagle....

You may have a point but you also need to see the other side....   When we sign on and see you post and your location is "singapore".  And you vocalize your opinion of the american govt, one can only think "why is this guy so out spoken... Hell he doesn't even live here".  Most "American Citizens" don't know all the garbage one deals with when they live outside of the american soil.  So that is something you have to deal with that most of us do not.   With that said....  I don't give a rats ass who is in office we have some freaking idiots in the government who want to make us dependent on them.  I don't think they can spend my money better than me...  Look I take offense to this bailout garbage.  It isn't helping, we all know that this has to takes it's coarse and rightfully so.  We always here "history repeats itself" well... Look back at how the last depression (yes, I said depression), how the govt tried to intervene and just delayed the inevitable.  I am proud of my last name "studebaker" but I wish the car business was still going strong but they too sold out to the unions and "policy" holders and look where it got them.  The government tried to help by buying all of the mail delivery vehicles (zip vans) from studebaker.   But it didn't help they ended up going under and that is that.....  What makes Chrysler, GM, or Ford and superior.   Let them fail...  Send a message to these folks that hey... You manage your money and investments wrong then you have to pay the consequences not the american people...

Let me make this well known....   I am all for keeping jobs here in America but if we continue to nail our industries to do this clean air garbage they will be forced to go overseas.  We have too many tree huggers in policy making and it is affecting the manufacturing industries.  You keep regulating these folks you are going to push them out and guess what???  Look at where we buy most of our stuff from.... CHINA....    China continues to build coal plants and polluting the air and we continue to buy their products...  So.....  The govt is okay with allowing us to own these products but let them pollute the air somewhere else (not in our backyard)???   Seriously... If we want to put a stop to this quit buying imported products and spend the extra money on American made (If you can still find it).

So Eagle... Understand those of us that live every day in this country and try and understand our opinion.   Also, you could be part of the problem... If you felt that strongly about America what could be more important to working overseas than working in America?  Did you by chance "go where the money is", just like these industries packing up and moving out??  What is the difference??  I know you never mention this but I just wanted to put it out their for you to understand what some Americans that live here may feel....

Personally, I could careless if you were here or there... But don't complain about being double taxed and monitored if you chose to live outside of the country that your a citizen of... Understand??  I don't proclaim to have all the answers but just wanted you to understand the other side of the coin....

I also told you that I would never reply to or read your posts... but I can't hold a grudge.... I do think you owe some an apology but I will keep the rest to myself...   Ride safe.....

I gotta step in here.  I live on a lake in Michigan.  It may as well be a cess pool.  The algae blooms occur weekly.  The lake has so much phosphorous in it you can smell it on warm days.  This is not uncommon in most lakes I have visited, both in Michigan and elsewhere.  I made a three year attempt to get a sewer system put around the lake to prevent those things that were causing these issues.  The best vote only got 35% of the residents to agree it needs to be done.  The main factor that prevented the system was people did not want to spend the money needed to put a system in place that would improve the lake conditions.

When I hear the term "Tree Hugger", I get a little angry.  When most of the "Tree Hugger" people take action, it is for the benefit of others, not just themselves.  The people that use that term are people who are acting in (what they purseive) as their best interest, not taking in consideration their neighbors or anyone else.  These same people are dumping nitrates in their and their neighbors water tables and wells.  On our lake, there have been 17 cancer deaths in a population of less than two hundred people in the last 10 years.  Nitrates are considered one possible cause of cancer, but do people want to admit they are contributing?

Say what you will, but if the general population doesn't wake up soon, our families are gonna pay the price.  Remember, nothing is free.

Wayne, I worked at many things in my lifetime and ended as the only environmental engineer in our department without a four year degree.  I didn't like how the local government treated us citizens in a lower cost development so, upon retirement,  I ran for city councilman and won....4 times.  I received the Sagamore of the Wabash award when I retired from the council, the highest award for public service in Indiana, look it up.

I did this by being concerned with my government, I did this without a four year degree, I did this with no experience in the political world, I did this in spite of being a very much average Joe with an average intelligence.  There is absolutely no bragging on my part, I'm just trying to make it clear that the average Joe CAN run for political office and win.

Having said that, it probably would be impossible for "Joe" to run for a high office because of the tremendous amount of money involved in getting his mug in the media, but it is not because of his mental reasoning.  The school of hard knocks also comes with mighty good credentials.

By the way, our country is a Republic and a representative form of government..  We "hire" or should "hire" the best person suited to have our interest in mind and therein lies the dilemma.

Kin,

With all do respect...  Don't take this personal but the point I am trying to make is that this is a two fold issue.  We want clean air, low price, American made products.  Something has to give... one of the three.  Other countries have no regard for the environment or in some cases their own citizen's health concerns.  It is all driven by $$$$$.   So, If we want to buy american made it will more than likely cost more due to regulations on industries to make the air cleaner (not a bad thing as long as we are willing to pay more for it).  Going back to the original statement about all the stuff we use or wear that is made overseas... We can't complain if we like the low price.  They can make things cheaper elsewhere...  I run my own business on the side and work for an insurance company full time.  I play with water as you could say.  I install irrigation in residential and commercial properties as well as perform yearly maintenance.  I completely understand the harm and danger of contaminates in our drinking water and our lakes.  I have taken several required courses regarding such.  I understand your concerns and it really surprises me that the government hasn't stepped in and at least did some tests.  I have worked w/ the EPA doing clean up in southwest missouri due to high test levels of lead from mining and agent orange that use to be hauled on railways through the area.  So I do know that the EPA is paying lots of money out to do clean up of this nature.  I don't know all the details of your situation but I do know that the organizations in charge of these clean ups do not want the information leaked out to the public.  It isn't spoken out that way but it is pretty much hinted on it.

Yes I agree with you that something should be done.  I think that their should be accountability to the polluters and they should be identified and the public should know.  I don't see that happening but I think the ethical side is sometimes stomped out of the way and run "business as usual".

With all that said, point I am simply making we need to have an understanding as to why we continue to find more products made outside of the United States of America.  And that is the true debate in my personal opinion.
