kind of messed up my weekend. I was pulling out of a gas station about 60 miles from home and was accelerating normally and about third gear, just like turning a light switch she started a loud clicking like a baseball cards in the spokes. Pulled her off the road and she was running fine but clicking at a rate proportionate to the RPM's. Turned around and went back to the gas station. Sound seemed to be under the right valve cover. Went home and got a trailer and a  Harley buddy to ride along (so embarrassing). She started up fine, still clicking, and I pulled her up on the trailer. Anybody got any suggestions what it might be?

That stinks. I'm assuming that since you stated that the noise seems to be proportional to the RPMs ,that the noise is present when in neutral and at a stand still. I don't have a magic answer , but it sounds like possibly a vacuum line or exhaust leak. Check your vacuum lines for cracks or breaks and your exhaust header bolts/gaskets. Also, thoughts of something amiss with one of the spark plugs, possibly loose maybe?  The other ideas(clutch, valves etc... )that come to mind may be more serious, but your mileage wouldn't immediately seem to indicate those kind of concerns. Of course if the noise you speak of happens while only in motion, then we'd be looking at the driveline. cooldude crazy2

I don't know how the water pump is designed on  these  bikes but mine clicked in my car when it went out. It was the bearings in the pump.

cooldude yes water pump was on my list too, but with only 38,000 miles, it just seems unlikely.

They also have a air tube under the head if the bike was not desmogged. And if it was i'm under the impression that that hole would have to be plugged.

If the noise is really coming from the valve cover?
It could be a carbon up valve that is stuck partially open.
Or an adjuster that has loosened up.

Remove the valve cover and check for a very loose appearing rocker arm.

Some early goldwings did have problems with carbon on the valve stems.

Its still on the trailer......

It was desmogged 15,000 miles ago. I did it using Redeye vacuum plugs, tight fitting soft plugs and soldered shut the two tube fittings and bolted them back on.

I had the pipes off for spring cleaning 350 miles ago and did not change the exhaust gaskets. I do that every third time, I know most do it every time but it has been working for me and I take my pipes off both bikes every year, its the only way to keep them clean in the hard to get to places, especially the Cobras. I don't see how it would be possible for the exhaust to suddenly start leaking, where would the gasket go? All of the exhaust nuts are tight, first thing I checked out on the road yesterday.

I removed the valve cover today and everything seems tight under there and the valve clearance checks out.

Its runs good, I am just not positive it is a mechanical click, now going to investigate vacuum and exhaust leaks, keep you posted.

use a flexible plastic tube ,hold one end to your ear and the other to the area on the bike that is making the noise and move it around until you hear where the noise is coming from .Tube acts like a stethoscope makes it easier to locate a noise like that

On one I desmogged I used some vacuum tubing caps to plug the large tubing that went to the pairvalves and one of them blew off made a lot of noise and changed sounds with rpms didn't hurt preformance rode it home  and fixed it right.

Something under the timing cover?
Not dropping a cylinder kinda confirms the all OK under the valve cover.

Yes, I would check the valves on both sides (already half done if you do one side), and then I would do a compression check on all six cylinders.

This is by no means an insult to your intelligence but have you checked the oil?

Yes, Oil was the first thing I checked and the exhaust nuts second. Like you say I might as well check under the other valve cover,  thanks.

Got to the bottom of it, pretty simple actually. A vacuum leak. It was the front right soft plug from the desmog 3 years ago had blown out. Just put in a new one but this time I staked the hole, something I did last year when I desmogged my 97. They were 9/16 plugs which is actually .011" bigger than the 14mm plug suggested for that port so it should have been a tight fit. It sure sounded mechanical at first but it was a simple fix.

The Problem

After

Took her around the thumb of Michigan yesterday and she is running fine.
