A motorcycle friend and I were discussing the Valks mpg,s. I told him I would like to get more between fill ups and he said to just keep the fuel gauge on reserve. Will that work? What are the implications?

The implications are you'll have no reserve...I like the fact that I know when I go on reserve I've got at least 30 miles to find a station..don't want to be pushing the phat gurl...

Not much of a friend to suggest that... Cheesy unless he wants you to get some walking and pushing exercise.

...and how will you get more miles out of a tank of fuel with the petcock set to "reserve" versus "on, then reserve?"

Even with a fuel gauge like on the IS, I keep the petcock on Run. Last week coming into Saskatoon she started to act weird, with two bars showing on the gauge. I went to reserve and it all went away, and the gauge started blinking in about five minutes. Ever so nice to know you have about 30 miles to find fuel.

I believe his suggestion meant that instead of having to refill while interstate riding, at about 125 miles, I would be able to refill without stopping at about 150 miles. I just wanted to know if there were any petcock implications!

You don't have to stop to switch from "ON" to "RES"...most of us do this while riding to the nearest gas station.   Wink

The amount of miles you get from the tank will be no different.  For example, if you put the petcock on "reserve," at 175 miles (just a made up number), the bike will sputter and you will be out of gas.  If the petcock is on "on," at 150 miles, the bike will sputter, indicating the bike is starving for fuel.  Switch to reserve at that point, and now you know you will run out of gas in about 25 more miles.  The amount of miles per tank does not change, but by NOT running on reserve, you will get a warning when you only have 25-35 miles remaining.

Well my first "motorcyclist friend", the one that explained where all the controls were before I threw my  leg over one for the first time, told me to never use the front brake.  I believe he was fearful of being launched over the handle bars.  I'm glad that I disregarded that advice before it cost damage or personal injury.  Motorcycles are still the most basic modes of transportation and everything on them has a purpose.  Think about it!   Wink
