Hey all...
New guy to the Kansas Board.
Michael, 56 yrs young, hailing from Newton, KS.
Bought my 98 Standard (Fast Black) in April of `12. Been lurking around the main board during that time, posting every once in awhile. Got some great tips, and Tech help when it was desperately needed.
I have a question that I hope someone here can help me with.
Does anyone know of a Motorcycle Shop that is competent working on/with the final drive of the Valk?
I think I may really need to get the rear end of my Valk serviced.
As mentioned, I bought my Valk in April of 2012. I've put maybe a thousand miles on it during that time. I was talking with the PO yesterday about the bike and, because of my research on the tech board here, asked about last time he's had the rear end serviced. You know, the 3 "O" rings and Thrust Washer, Oil and Grease, Check the Splines, ect. I'd learned from the tech board that the rear end should be serviced every 12,000 miles or so and was wanting to find out when the next one should be done. Well, turns out he said he'd never had it done. Had never heard of that needing to be checked/serviced.
So here I am. Bike has 41.000 miles on it now and the rear end has never been done.
I'm going to be ordering a couple of the Thrust Washers today from either CheapCycleParts or HDL and getting the 3 "O" Rings from redeye tech, as these things are probably cheaper for me to get myself rather than wait and pay the mark up for a shop to order them. Should I also replace the boot?
Anything else I need to get for this job?
Does anyone know of a Honda Motorcycle Shop in Kansas, preferably in SO. Central Kansas, that you'd trust with your Valk?
I haven't been experiencing any problems or hearing any strange noises coming from the rear end, but I want to get this taken care of before I do. 41,000 mile without having this serviced, seems to me to be pushing the boundaries of even Honda's best engineering.
Here's a pic of my phatgurl on the way home from July's Cassoday Run. She shor is purdy!
Thanks for any information. I really appreciate it!
    Mike

what are you doing this weekend?

If you ride it to Salina, i will put it on the lift and show YOU how to do it, we can do the whole thing, if you need more parts, we can button it up, you order your parts, we tear it apart and fix it when they come in.

That way you get 2 trips through it, help doing it, and no bill from a shop.

oh, and WELCOME

carolina bike and trike has the orings in a 5 service pack for under 20 bucks shipped.  Thats 15 orings, 5 of each for under what honda wants for 1 service set.

http://www.carolinabikeandtrike.com/ORings.htm

HDL is where i would get the rest of what you are talking about.
http://www.hdlparts.com/

I have a couple full oring sets, and at least one washer, and a boot.

As for your question about what shop would I take my bike to for service.  Not a single one that did not have a mechanic that was on this board.  I do my own maint, and if i get stuck, these guys/gals are a call away with whatever help i ever need.

Kind Sir:     R U running the original tires?    Didn't think so.

When a new tire was mounted, the rear end should have been serviced at that time.      So from your mileage, I'd say it has been serviced at lest 3 or maybe 4 times already.

So don't panic on us.

PS:    Welcome aboard.      You got some very good guys in Kansas.   To name a couple more is GiG, Hoser, and good old Willow.

"Should have" is correct,  but he said the PO hadn't ever had it done.  We don't all take our bikes to a Honda dealer for servicing with the expectation that everything that should get done IS getting done.  When I have had a tire changed at a shop, they did just what I asked... changed a tire.

Dalen, you're a good man for that offer and Miscott, have no fear.. he will do you right and teach you well.

Miscott,

Welcome Brother and Neighbor! I am just around the corner from you I believe, in North Newton, how we keep missing each other I have no idea. Dalen is right on, no need to go to the stealer you have many on this board who are more than able and willing to help with service issues. Dalen does an outstanding job and his offer is a good one.

Just to give you a rundown on our group we try to get together once a month for a meal, ride, or just to get together. This usually occurs on the third Saturday of the month, but we also get together on the spur of the moment. I think you will enjoy this group and we have some truly talented and knowledgeable members. Check your PM on this board for a message.
