If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Colorado Springs, CO

« on: July 07, 2009, 11:10:39 AM »

Went on another nice ride over the 4th.  COS to Steamboat Springs via US 24, CO 9, over Hoosier Pass, Rabbit Ears Pass. overnite there then to Glenwood Springs, then CO 82 thru (eventually) Aspen and over Independence Pass to US 24 & home.  Seems my arms are too short.  Sitting all the way back on my Mustang seat, against the Utopia backrest, I can get fingertips on the grips.  I have to lean forward to use the clutch or brake levers.  I need at least an inch more rearward.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

I had a set of 1 1/2" riser extensions made for my IS...

http://www.spirit-1100.com/ValkAccessories-RiserExtension.htm

So, I know you can add 1 1/2" to the risers without affecting too much...did have to re-route the throttle cables and choke...I think.

I think GenMar used to make them.  CruiserCustomizing still shows them on their site but it is listed as discontinued.

Using the stock cables, the max you can go is 8 inches, and then you have to reroute the cables behind the triple tree, and reverse the wire bundle clips on the bottom of the bars.  I like the Harley Deuce risers, they are beefy and look really nice.  Been running a set on my Interstate for years.

Master Blaster--
When you say Harley Deuce risers is that a HD part, is it for a Softail Deuce, I haven't been able to find it by Googling "Harley Deuce Risers".  Thanks

Go to the J&P site and search it for Deuce risers.

Here's a good page about different risers that Tim Skelton posted in 2005.

Grouch...

I am 6'1 and when I took my first long motorcycle trip we rode from southwest Missouri up the Mississippi valley to Minnesota and by the time we had reached our destination (took two days).  My back was killing me...  If you drew a straight line across my back from shoulder blade height, that is where all my pain was located.  I purchased these risers http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=519&str=2 from aeromache (I think they are almost identical as the aeromache and 25 dollars cheaper from directline).   I have since been on several 2k mile rides and not once did i feel fatigued or pain in that area ever again.   I am sold on these risers.  I like these better than the extension pieces because i have my Zumo 550 mounted right in front of the risers and in order to center the gps I needed to mount to the handle bar between the risers.  So it works perfectly!

It is the best 125 bucks I have sent on the bike....

Happy trails,

Daniel,

Funny you should post that picture!    I had a similar situation with my kury highway pegs.  The "horseshoe" piece that mounts to the peg itself had a hair line fracture and I didn't realize it until I was cruising at 70mph on the interstate.  I hit a bump and my peg fell off.  All I remember was trying it get my foot dislodged from being wedged between the road and my oem foot pegs.  I was able to come to a stop and go back and get the actual peg.  After further inspection to the left side (peg still intact), I noticed that one had a small stress fracture in the mold.  I contacted Kury and they told me that they have never heard of such a thing and that I would just need to order that replacement piece.  Seriously, go put a magnet up against your highway peg and you will find that it DOES NOT stick!!!!    It isn't even metal!!!!   What a joke...  Of all the places that you should have metal, it should be risers and pegs for goodness sakes.   The highway peg set runs 125 dollars and it isn't metal???  grrrrrrrr    don't get me started.  They are charging us mint price for half the quality.  I guess as long as we continue to buy it they will continue to sell it at whatever quality they can get away with...

Thanks for reminding me off my near fatal accident last year!!

Check your pegs!!!

Back again.  Ordered the riser from HDL.  Supposed to be here Monday.  Sfter reading through the handlebar removal/installation section of the shop manual, is it really necessary to remove the grips, reservoirs, switches etc, just to change the risers?  I know I need to remove the tank, Daniel Wink  Thanks in advance.  Stan

You don't have to remove the tank, just lay a couple of thick towels on it to help protect it in case the bars slip.  And if you are just replacing the risers, you do not have to remove the grips and everything from the bars.  Now, if you are going with a taller riser (or more pullback), you may have to re-route the throttle cables to behind the triple trees.  That will require you to open the right housing and remove the cables.  Be careful that you don't kink the cables while pulling them through the triple trees and make sure the cables are not kinked at full right turn after you move them.  It could make for an interesting test ride if you don't.

Thanks, Joe.  The thing about the tank was tongue-in-cheek ref to another post where Daniel said you have to remove the tank for everything  Wink  Stan

http://www.scootworks.com/scootworks/sw_phatrisers.htm

I am a fairly new owner and I had a Mustang with a backrest on the way before I had the bike. Problem was, I shrunk a inch or so when I put the seat on and leaned back. I got the Phatrisers 4in and grew some.
http://www.scootworks.com/shop.cgi/page=partshonhandle.htm/SID=PUT_SID_HERE

With the aid of some looooong zip ties to hold the bars while they were off and a towel, it was about 1/2 hour installation.
