My chrome oil filter cover (don't even remember the brand) has been getting increasingly harder to install after an oil change, and remove during the next one. I fear it's now out of round after so many previous attempts to remove it. I've thought of heating it or icing it to see if either might make it easier to remove. Also thought about removing the old filter with the cover installed, and then trying to use a bench vice to hold the filter while trying to force the cover off. I've seen a lot of experience on this board suggest some really creative ways of dealing with problems. What'cha got for me? <insert the obligatory "buy a new chrome cover" response here>

Yeah, I thought of that, too. Might be a last resort. Certainly an inexpensive alternative!

Throw that thing away. If a rock can pierce a filter, it can pierce a filter with a thin wall beer can just as easily. I have one of these old style Harley shock top covers, new. They come in pairs for $25 and fit the OE filter perfectly (and will fit a longer, but not wider aftermarket filter too), and have a tightener clamp built in (which you aim down at 6 o'clock). Chrome is top notch and cleans up easily. Keep one for a spare, or sell the extra for half your cost. I always shoot some penetrating oil inside it before installing over the filter, always comes off in my hand easily. http://www.jpcycles.com/product/7000095 A spray solvent and strap wrench should get the old one off. Turn it left, NOT right.

I use a Stainless Steel $1.79 Salt Shaker that I purchased at Meijer's. It will fit both the stock filter and t he longer NAPA Gold #1356 (3 1/2" in length).

Jess, how far past the filter do those stick out? To far and it rubs my mud flap, already missing a stud from hitting.
Did the salt shaker thing and lost mine 5 miles from home, Sturgis bound.

It fits flush to the filter bottom (like a glove), it will not hit anything.
Remembering that the OE Honda filter for Valk (and others) just got smaller than it was for years earlier, I suppose it could extend one or two millimeters... I have been using it with the new Honda filters since they came out, no problem. It does not overlap the filter housing like Cobra and some of the other more spendy filter covers. You just snug it up on the filter itself.

I would remove the whole unit and then separate them on the bench.

I would remove the whole unit and then separate them on the bench. If it was like my old one that wasn't possible as it had 2 tabs to keep it from working loose and falling off. Tabs were on the cover. Had to knock the tabs off of mine with a dremil wheel and a small chisel. That is the reason mine now wears a beer can.

Good advice I use these also, cheap and look great. I don't even bother to tighten the strap bolt any more and I've never lost one yet.

Hi guys: So, my still new to me 2001 Standard has a chrome plated filter cover with a "corduroy-type" textured finish. Is this just a friction fit? In that case should I twist off counterclockwise (wearing a rubber glove so my hand won't slip) to uncover the filter which I then twist off counterclockwise with a oil filter wrench-key? Or do I need a strap wrench for this job? Thanks, Fiat Lux

Does it look like this? If so, it's a Cobra billit oil filter cover. There's two set screws holding it on. All you need is an allen wrench to take it off.
