tickedoff came home from a ride the other day and noticed no headlight.  I have a 97 standard with standard wattage lamp. Lamp test ok so I check the start button.  I noticed that the red/black wire it is the closest to you on the right side across from the blue/white came loose.  I resolder and it seems fine.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Ps the contacts were not burned, in good shape and still had dielectric compound on them.

My headlight is out and it is not the bulb! I don't understand where or how to find the wires that might need to be soldered back into place. Thank you!

It can be your starter switch or the hi/low beam switch.  Both can be carefully taken apart and the contacts cleaned.  There is also connections within the headlight housing that could be at fault. Check out a wiring diagram and follow the wire colors. I had your issue years ago and after cleaning the starter switch it turned out to be a dirty hi/low beam switch.

There is remedies on this board that eliminate the high current passing through the handle bar switches.
They make use of relays.  Do a search or try this...

I been there done that..

My money is on a dirty starter button switch...
(it disables power to the lamp during start up)

How to clean it up is in the tech notes...
