Have a new to me '97 tourer (not my first one). Riding along yesterday and at 133 miles she starts to cough letting me know to switch to reserve, which I did. Gas to the carbs etc. and I proceed right? I travel 7 miles and slowly die out (run out of gas) at a stop light. She will not start back up switched in any position. Roll to a very nearby gas station (thank you Lord), fill up completely, the tank will hold 4.63 MAX. Switch to "on" she fires right up and I continue.
Can anyone enlighten this old guy on what's happening here or has had a similar experience?
Thanks in advance and Blessings,
Woody

Since you're not new to Valks, I'm sure you weren't in the reserve position all along and when you switched the petcock you actually moved to the standard run position??!! ??? Did you? Probably not. I'll let the President (Valkpilot) chime in. I believe he is an expert on these things.

No Sir Tom, did not do that, but the thought entered my feeble mind. VP is en route back from the left coast today.

Doubt it. Lori and I put over 150 miles on yesterday with no probs. Not that hot. You might have crud in the reserve pick up tube. After you filled up, did you try running on reserve again (knowing that you could safely switch back)?

Sounds like early signs of petcock failure. Yo get a pinhole in a diaphragm and the result is fuel starvation at one point or another. 133 miles seems a normal time to hit reserve but the reserve seems to be having issues...........get a real fuel valve is my advise.

Probably a petcock issue.... but could it be possible the very bottom of the tank filter screen, used on reserve, (which is attached to the petcock), is gummed/clogged up?

Petcock, venthose(s), or fuel screen on petcock. In that order in my opinion.

Well you got a little over 30 mpg , which is ?? Ok ?? Could be better... Sounds like early signs of petcock failure. I was told it was a good idea to run 30 miles or so on reserve every tank full. I keeps the lines clear.

I'm no expert, so someone might correct me. I can KINDA see that, but I would worry about forgeting your running on reserve on purpose. Reserve uses the same "lines" as non reserve just a smaller portion of it. I would think that just even a mile would ensure flow. From what I understand the non reserve runs though the tall tube from the petcock. The reserve portion just runs though the hole at the top of the petcock.

I've seen similar recommendations on the Tech Board. They don't make sense to me because: - Both the main and reserve inlets are screened
- Both are at the same outlet level
- In a tank as small as ours, the turbulence created by filling up the tank mixes everything together anyway

Rebuilding the petcock is easy to do and you can take a look at the screen while you're doing it. It's not hard - even I figured out how to do it.

Thanks for all the advise Gents. Looks like I'll start with the petcock on my new-old peppermint.
