Well here's a new one for me.  I put a new battery in my Valk yesterday.  I turned the key on, lights and everything worked.  When I hit the start button, there was a pop like a fuse blowing and everything went dark.  HOWEVER, I cannot find a blown fuse.  The main looks fine (even tried jumping it) and all the fuses in the fuse box look fine.  Are there some hidden fuses that I don't know about?  I thought I'd been all over this bike, but this one is confusing me.  Suggestions?

ADDED - Guess I should add that my Valk is a 1998 Tourer.

The starter relay under the right side cover is the prime candidate.

Thank you thank you.  That's where I'll start.  Would that make the whole bike go "dark"?

ADDED - Just looked at the diagram.  I guess it would.  Thanks again.

This is kind of interesting.....were there any additional wires on the battery terminals that might not be put back properly. Hitting the start button removes power from lots of circuits reducing drain through that 30 A fuse located on the start relay?? Did you do any other things while the battery was out.....have to ask this...is the polarity of the battery wiring correct......

I guess you do have to ask these day, hehe.  Yes, the polarity is correct.  The fuse on it is fine.  Trying to decide the easiest way to test the relay now.  No other wires were changed, and no fuses are blown; verified this visually and by testing with multimeter.

GOT IT!  Sooooo, the bottom side of the main ground terminal was a little corroded.  Found this because ground at battery and ground on bike weren't the same on my multimeter.  cleaned and put back; everything works.  BUT I'm definitely ordering a relay and keeping it on the bike after seeing what others have put about them and being stranded.

Thanks guys!  cooldude

Glad you found it. As for the relay, that isn't the problem, it is the connector to the relay. If you inspect it and keep it clean (no corrosion), you should see any trouble before it happens.

Here's the wire/connector you need.

If you want a starter relay order from amazon.com got 2 of them for $10.50 a piece. Make sure it has a 30amp and not 20amp fuse in it. Smiley

Ty.  Going to try to get those ordered today!

HOWEVER, I now have a secondary problem; the black wire over the dog bone fuse is getting hot; especially the screw.  I noticed this on the way to work today.  There is a little corrosion around that screw, but not bad.  I'm going to clean it when I get home.  Any other ideas?
