I/S been sitting for a year. Sons started it for a few min several months ago but it puked gasoline. Advised them to not run it again until we find leak. Just cou pled vac  hose to it and tried to open same

Can draw air thru hose but feel no resistance on hose. Is the diaphram shot? Is this where the gas was puking out? They said a lot of fuel came out. Gonna go back and look some more while waiting....

I think you said it had been setting for a long period of time.

1.  Carbs are probably all varnished up and a needle is stuck open.
2,  Gas tank is probably all gunked up also.

I'd start by pouring a full can of SeaFoam in it, shake it around, let it set overnight.

Next day (have a long handled screwdriver close by) start it and start popping the carbs with the handle part, ya'll is a trying to knock the crap loose from the needle and seat.    If you can get it to stop slushing gas out at ya, take it for a little 10 mile or so ride at RPM's under 2,900.   Shut it off and let it set for about 24 hours.      End of 24 hours start it and see if the gas has stopped gushing.

If it hasn't, sorry, you will never to pull the carbs and do a good overhaul of them,  might have to also put in a petcock, if you have to do this I'd suggest a Pingle.

Good Luck.

Thanks RJ, We just slammed the door and left the shop for awhile. couldn't get the gas selector off the shaft. Had to tip the tank enough we could get to the petcock nut. finally got it off tank. Been so long since I worked on the bike, I forgot everything I thought I knew about it-don't remember having to take  the selector shaft off to move the tank but it's under the frame, so I must have....Sucking air on the vacuum port seems to do nothing but give me gas smelling/tasting(no liquid) air. Was it leaking thru a busted vacuum diaphram?

The last paragraph here is a good test for the petcock...

Did ya remove the little phillips head screw in the center of the selector?
