How do I remove the pinion cup? I see entries that say "impact wrench". But how exactly is that done?
How do I keep the cup and gears from spinning? Do I put the cup part in a vise? There are also comments about special tools from Honda. Are these required. I have a maintenance manual and that's what is illustrated. Has everyone who's replaced their pinion cup purchased the special tools? Just looking for advice with as much detail as needed. I have a brand new pinion cup and shaft but step one of course is to remove the old one. Thanks

The impact gun will give you the breaking force you need.  I was able to hold the cup in my hand to keep it from spinning and tight enough to remove the nut.  Reverse for re-installing.  Again, was able to hold the cup in my hand.

if it trys to turn put the flange back in the splines and use a bar or large wrench to hold the flange while using the impact wrench.

Like the fellas said, the cup retainer nut will come right with an air gun. The cup is really really hard, its made from such tough stuff, and, is hard to hang on to. But, the gun will spin the nut right off and back on again.

Okay then. Will be getting my hands on an impact wrench and give it a try. Thanks to all for the advice.

I again salute the collective wisdom of the VRCC - borrowed an impact wrench, grabbed the pinion cup with gloved hand, applied the wrench - badda bing ! Nut came right off. Cleaned things up. Put new pinion cup and nut in. Applied the wrench - badda bing. Nut is in, snug and tighter than a miser's fist. Thank you for the information.
