I have a virgin 98 std, runs great.

The more I research the de-smog, the more I'm thinking of doing it, before my bike begins to suffer from pair valve and vacuum hose issues.

So, I've heard from the de-smog advocates; but I want to hear from anyone who wished they did not de-smog.

Thanks!

Done right... I can see no downside.

Of course, we could always end up with some (asswipe) G deciding to require all original OE emissions at inspections.  (Which would require an extensive library and inspectors who know what they are doing...highly unlikely)

I have a whole box of parts from two bikes.... I don't know why I keep it.   It's not nostalgic.

Nope, no regrets at all.  You can fill a small shopping bag with all the desmog parts you don't need.  Glad to get rid of all that unnecessary weight and have a much cleaner engine bay.  My Valk used to gargle and pop alot on decel before I desmogged it.  Now its smooth as silk.

There are still many that have not been touched and there really is nothing wrong with that. Just keep an eye on the vacuum lines and caps. The original lines are certainly due to be replaced if they haven't been.

I don't regret it.  But I did have one of the "pipe, air feed" fittings blow out of the hole - right rear, under the Kury valence cover - and I thought at first I had developed an exhaust leak with all the noise it made.  I had just cut off the tube and folded it over to close the hole.  Easy fix, I just added a shim between the valence cover and the top of the fitting and that held it in. No other regrets - no maintenance of that system or all the vacuum tubes I removed.

I don't necessarily regret it, but if I had a do-over I would have left my bike close to stock. I think the only real thing mother Honda did wrong was the fuel petcock-definitely change that for a Pingle. The rest is pretty good. Take it from someone that spent $22,000 in the first two years of ownership on bike, paint and upgrades.

I regret it. It works fine, but after I did mine, I helped Stanley Steamer replace his vacuum lines
with the Red Eye kit, that works fine too. I guess "regret" is too strong, there's no downside to
doing it...

Did mine a few years ago. Enjoyed getting rid of all that crap that could cause trouble. Also replaced vacuum lines, (piece of mind) and added cruise control, (neatest thing since ice cream). No trouble, no regret. Have fun!!

NO regrets here either.  Desmog stopped popping on deceleration, nice clean easy to install any of the desmog kits available.

Where can I read more about de-smogging?
tech section of the site has a good write up about it.

It cured my popping under decel too, and when it is done it looks clean as hell under the tank. Room for other stuff...

I just completed the shinny desmog kit and replaced the remaining vacuum plugs and O ring intake gaskets. I suspected an air leak somewhere(god only knows).

The engine now revs up, holds rpm and decelerates as SMOOTH AS SILK! Very noticeable, and worth the money and time. Everything came frome redeye.

Desmogged two years ago when I rebuilt my carbs.  I run Cobra 6x6 & desmog fixed the popping on deceleration.  Started developing some popping again lately, but took care of that by replacing the vacuum caps on each intake.  I use some rubber caps I picked up at my local parts store.  Seems their life is just shy of 2 years.
No regrets.

De-smooged all three, no regrets.

I did it so I can replace it if forced by the babysitting government of the state I live in.

All the chrome pipes are still there, just capped.

All the extra parts are sitting on a shelf.

I can't tell that it does anything other than remove some possible vacuum leaks. It doesn't
soup up your bike. Having helped replace the vacuum lines on Stanley Steamer's bike,
I'm sure it can be left stock and be just fine. Some people feel like de-smog is a must do,
I don't...

there is no technical reason to fear a de-smog.
my direct sales Belgian model came without that crap originally.
to me that means that mother Honda thinks that it is not necessary, only to comply with local legislations.

Yes, I had my bike dyno tuned with a Factory Pro jet kit...new mains, new shimmable needles.  I would say it cured 90+ percent of the decel popping but if I was very heavy handed on the throttle and suddenly backed off completely there would be the pop...too much fuel.

I gained back 7 hp from stock after dyno tuning....it wasn't cheap but it was worth it for me.

Good luck...
