Here's the deal.  The Indianapolis Star... printed THIS about my niece and her daughter.

http://www.indystar.com/article/20090709/LIVING01/907090412/-1/ARCHIVE/Indianapolis+mother+rolls+over+on+baby+while+sleeping

It's a LOAD of crap.

on that main page there is a link to the author's e-mail address.

E-mail him for me and bust his balls about being a POS.  We'd all apreciate it.

kevin.oneal@indystar.com

This was my e-mail to him:

Kevin... what happened to verification of stories before you print them?

This story is full of inaccuracies.

The baby has a tumor in her heart.  You just pissed on a family that's
already dealing with enough, let alone a slanderous, misreported,
piece of feces like this.

How about doing the right thing and print a retraction, and admit
you're a sensationalistic, garbage reporting, gossip slinger?

I also wrote the editor.

I also posted in the comments section.

Thanks in advance!

Not once does the article state that this incident was related to a mother rolling over onto the baby.  The fact that the article starts out mentioning the rollover subject strongly implies that this is what occured in this instance, obviously a false implication.  Email sent  Angry

Being in the news bidness for 15 yrs I flung a couple of inside "newsie" slams regarding editors, psa faves, (usually somebody up the food chains' baby). Told him I was just curious, as he should be! Evil

Well I guess he prefaced it with "apparently"...

A day after the Indiana Department of Child Services announced the start of a campaign warning parents about the dangers of sleeping in the same bed as their children, a sleeping Southeastside mother apparently rolled over on her 11-month-old daughter. The infant was rushed to a hospital.

It's still shoddy reporting if you ask me.  They knew about the tumor yesterday afternoon.  As I reported to ya'll this AM.

Verify, verify, verify! "apparently" is a Non-Starter for ANY reporter! Poorly written. St. Pete Times city desk woulda chewed him up and spit him out!
This cat learn how to write by watching the "Daily Metropolis" city room scenes from old Superman episodes?

It seems the word "verify" is no longer in the english language for so called "journalists".
They just put "apparantly", we heard, supposidly, rumor has it, it has been reported, someone said, in front of it, then go on and report whatever fits their agenda.
It is ALL shameful.
You are lucky they corrected it.  They must have had a LOT of complaints, because they usually refuse to do so.

Remember when reporters reported the news instead of making it up.

Guess I'm a little late - but i sent it anyway.  ( concerning the update ) This reporter writes like a teenager trying to make excuses.  Amazing for what passes as news.

True the word "apparently" was used by IMHO used too loosely.

Got an interesting letter from the editor today.
Quote
I share your feelings for the parents in this matter. A call to them might have cleared this up earlier, but their names were not released to us until Thursday. I also think we may have overplayed the story, and I will discuss that with the editor who handled it. I don't share your feeling, however, that Kevin O'Neal villainized anyone. Kevin is a well-meaning reporter trying to do his job. He reported what he was told by emergency officials who went to the scene. He ran a follow-up story correcting the cause as soon as it was determined by a doctor. We did not name the people involved in either story. And when he thought it was a sleeping incident, he quoted a child services official saying parents who sleep with infants often have good intentions and do not understand the risks. Nothing in the tone or his handling of the story suggests any attempt to villainize anyone.

All that said, I do agree we should have gotten it right the first time around, which means we probably should not have run the story until more information was released. It shows that we should redouble our efforts to be accurate at all costs. I assure you we will take this as a lesson, and try to do better next time.

Sincerely,
Steve Berta

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to make light of just one point in your response that I feel is in error.

Intentions and results are sometimes loosely linked, meaning that the final outcome of a well intentioned statement or matter may ultimately turn negative.  Read the comments left by readers of this very publication and you will clearly see the results of Kevin's intentions.  There were many comments that ultimately came to the rescue of the family, but the overall tone is clearly felt.  The linkage between the recent educational promotion of the dangers, concerning sleeping with an infant, and the reported story of this family are clearly linked, and not well differentiated as anything but an occurrence of smothering, from having slept in bed with the child.

I know that stories will occasionally have inaccuracies.  I believe that this time, those that know the real story found it hard to understand how it got to print without references to sources and verification the first time through.  The end result remained the same for the family.  We are elated to know that this little girl is alive, but the celebration of that event will forever be tarnished.

Here's to smarter reporting in the future!

Again, thank you for your time.

Looks like they are feeling the pressure from the people on this.
Hope your family is doing well!

Thanks.  They have not responded to me yet.

And you're right.  While I don't believe it was the authors intent to villanize my niece really, his poor reporting DID pour salt into her heart ache, as well as her husbands, and their parents and extended families.
