I had a pinion and shaft failure last summer in WY. Had it repaired at a dealer there, ever since it has a low speed growl? Just when first taking off slowly and or if you make a low speed turn like in a parking lot.  accels great and noise goes away. does have some driven spline wear which is on the agenda this winter to be replaced but not horrible. Maybe I am just paranoid since someone other than me worked on my bike? He seemed like a well versed mechanic but who knows.

I'd loosen up the rear axle and the 4 bolts that hold the drive unit to the swingarm. Retorque the axle and then tighten the 4 bolts. The wheel flange splines are worn a bit, as you stated. This may be the source of noise.

Yep, What Sandy said. Also, could it be a bad wheel bearing ?

had thought of that  think  will start there. Is that something need to get the weight off of the wheel for or is just loosening and retorqueing everything in the right order ok to do  with the bike on the ground?

You will want to lift it to check the bearings anyway, and should have it off the ground to do the re torque sequence. Kill two birds with one stone cooldude
