I got a chinese battery from the local Suzuki shop, and just slapped it in the bike once...

It didn't last long, a year or so...

Chinese doesn't necessarily make it bad, but I've learned since I've been here that
batteries need to be properly charged before using...

As Mike said you should charge them for a few hours before using them.  AGM or absorbed glass mat is supposed to be better or the ones for rough use ie an ATV bouncing around a lot.  I had to put a new one in when we got here in Maggie Valley and I got one from Advanced/Discount auto called an extreme power sports or something similar.

Larue, you might have a small power drain from somewhere. Have you done any changes involving wiring lately. Also, do you have a voltmeter? The battery should read right at 12v when not running, maybe a tad more. A good one should read around 13v when not running. Then when running it should go up to around 14+. If all that checks ok, then I'd pull the ground off the battery for a couple days. Then replace it and try starting. If it works good, then you know you have a short somewhere.

I've done the fuel gauge wiring and I have LEDs all over the bike, speakers and ipod connection , the air horns and so on, so will do as John said and see what it reads. My battery was made by a big company in Pennsylvania as suggested by some of you a while back on the old board, I just don't remember the company name. Battery plus sells it.

John makes a good point.  I never had a battery drain problem, except when the battery died at the end of life, until I added LEDs.  It seems the controller for the LEDs requires power to detect when the remote buttons are pressed so it will turn on the lights.  Thus, you will always have a small draw on the battery which will drain it if you don't ride it frequently enough so it can charge it up.  Alternately, a trickle charger would prevent the draw down as would a weekly charge when it isn't being ridden.

That company in PA is called East Penn (and other names) . They make great batteries, normally AGM. John is probably right about a small drain due to a short somewhere. Good luck finding it Larue.
