Yep that's a problem right there... Had the exact same thing happen to my ST1100 in 2002. Happened in Minnesota when I was on my way to Alaska. Thanks to Trimble Honda in Austin, MN they had me diagnosed & back on the road in less than 24hrs!

Glad it looks as though Ali will be fixed and reunited with DDT!

Holy Cow!!! 

incredible news!!! I can almost feel my baby between my legs already!!! Troutdude called me this evening and gave me a heads-up on developments... Needless to say, all of this has exceeded my expectations by a long shot!

Gordon (Lucky 13) also called and we chatted a bit, too. He is the one who replaced my rear pumpkin, last October, I think it was... He had told me then that I needed to bring the bike back to him so he could replace the universal boot and another O-ring or something, but I'd forgotten all about that. I'd had the rear tire replaced down here after he did his work, partly because it was convenient, and partly because I didn't want to impose on Gordon any further... A mistake!

Gordon is one of the three best mechanics I know, and I trust him completely! This is probably a self-inflicted wound more than anything else (even though two mechanics have changed the rear tire since Gordon did his thing), but I accept full responsibility nonetheless...

Terry Nickel, t-man403, is an amazing guy. He could easily and completely without fault or blame simply have honored the deal he and I made, kept quiet about the outcome of his work, and made some bucks in the process. Instead, he chose to see if he could repair my lady and return her to me... What can you say about such a person except that he is a stand-up guy who has my admiration and gratitude forever...

Oss chose to help out in a necessary and important way, and I appreciate his contribution, too. Most of us know him and that he is a stand-up guy with a big heart... thanks, my friend.

And then there is all of you... My family... A bunch of folks who all pitched by providing enthusiasm, hope, some money, lots of advice... and much needed moral support... Yes sir, I am indeed a 'family man'... and a very, very fortunate one, too...

This is what I can say as of now. I have received 2 pm"s regarding parts and I also have options at this end. In reality the parts situation is taken care of either way, and the offers are very generous ....... thank you very much!! Just give me until later tonight to respond to pm's. Okay here's the deal on the parts and I hope I don't get heck from you guys as I know you all want to participate in anyway you can.

"eric in md" sent me a pm stating he had all the parts and he'd ship them to me tomorrow.

"Oss" sent me a pm that the paypal account had the cash to pay for replacement parts for "eric in md".

A couple of the guys at the "Honda Powerhouse" have been keeping tabs on my progress with this project by means of asking me every time I'm in, "how's it going with the Valk?" Today I took the parts over and showed the manager how it was going and asked how much the parts would be. As of tonight he still hasn't given me the cost but confirmed he had the order in and he is having the goods air mailed so that I will have the parts this Saturday. "Honda Powerhouse" is going to covering the cost on this as he thinks this is just a cool story and wanted to be a part of it. 

The other thing I had to take into consideration was the cost of shipping the parts up to me. I order quite a bit out of the US off ebay and privately and it's a crap shoot as to whether customs will charge tax and brokerage fee's.

So, I hope you guy's will agree with me that it is better this way as it will save both time and money!

This story just keeps getting better and better. Kudos to Honda Powerhouse..Since we no longer have a sponsoring Honda OEM vendor, I'm going to be placing some online orders through them for brake pads, etc.
Hopefully, others will consider the same. We should mention that they'll get rewarded for helping in this particular situation.

One pic showed the shaft forward splines. They were well worn. I'd replace the U joint too as that wear is also inside the joint. Please lube the shaft splines with Valvoline Durablend (3% Moly). That shaft damage comes from the wrong and too little grease.

We was talking about ALI yesterday on the ride we did. It was noted that water got in that tube somewhere and about the only place that could happen is the u-joint boot... You should replace the u-joint and boot IMO just for peace of mind if nothing else.

My take is substantially different. The problem started with a misdiagnosis which was the basis for Bruce abandoning Ali and taking up with a new ride. The diagnosis was one that many on this board could have correctly made. The result of this was a lowball offer made to Bruce on a trade in on a different ride. The true problem could have been exposed in less than an hour.

Since the "victim" was from out of the country and hundreds of miles from home, they sold him another bike at probably full markup since his choices were limited. They came out smelling like a rose and Bruce took what he could get. No wonder they are "stepping up" to help out, probably out of guilt since they are aware of the true diagnosis. They made more money off the sell of the replacement bike than they are offering to help! Some sacrifice!!

If they want to be fair to Bruce, I see two options for them to do that.

1. Offer to buy back the replacement bike at full price and pay Bruce's expenses, including fuel, meals and lodging to ride the replacement back and pick up Ali.

2. If Bruce wants to keep the replacement bike, pay his expenses to go pick up Ali including one way airfare, fuel, meals and lodging to return home.

Just my take, most of yours is apparently different.

It would be nice, if they misdiagnosed to see full payback, but hey i am no canadian attorney
just a country lawyer from the Bronx.

My only concern is to collect money for the DDT ALI fund, thank those who gave without embarassing anyone with amounts donated and letting Bruce  advise me how to dole out for Terry which I am sure will be smoothly done between us.

Whether a 10 spot or more please know that all donations are appreciated and the fact that a person steps up speaks for itself

We are in my estimation close to having enough to cover the gas money to Alabama and back but not enough to cover any other costs such as the 8 days of lodging it takes to get there and back. Of course if members offer to put Terry up on the way........... the money will stretch longer


I am operating on the assumption Terry is riding the Valk down from Alberta

Dont forget its 4-5 days ride from Calgary to Alabama (assuming nothing goes wrong otherwise on the way)

Guy's, I did not want to have to address this here but it seems it needs to be as this thread is meant to be a positive one, not one to point fingers.

Many times, especially on forums, there is more to the story than is told, and trust me in this case, the story of diagnostic's is bigger.

It costs money to take the bike apart to see what is wrong. Worst case is the tranny is shot and if so, it was going to cost X$'s to repair and it wasn't cheap! If the go ahead is given for the repair and it just happened to be the tranny, the bike would be about a week in the shop due to getting the parts, time for repair and shop time already booked up. A week sitting around is a long time while your on a holiday\ride! So the decision was made to get a bike and keep on moving. Had the break down happened at home for "DDT", I'm sure he would have gone ahead with the repair regardless of it being the tranny or not. I'm sorry for passing along the part of the story I heard at the beginning of all this happening.

Honda Power house owes no apologies to anyone. When I told them what I was doing, they did as I thought they'd do and joined in with you guy's and I to help a good deed become even better.  

How did I know they'd help out? Well, I know Honda picked up the bike on they're $. Had the bike needed a truck to deliver it , that would have been an easy couple hundred bucks right there.

For those of you that don't no, we just went through major flooding in June similar to Colorado right now. Rocky Honda PowerHouse donated a ton of generators and pumps to help people out, as the situation was bad to say the least!

Dealerships just can't seem to win no matter what, but in this case I think Rocky Honda PowerHouse is a winner!  

No matter your opinion about the diagnostics, the end result of all of this will be a positive one.

All I can tell you at this point is DDT and I have sent back and forth a couple PM's.

Due to the leafs changing color, the temperature getting a bit cooler and me being a HVAC guy, I'm very busy right now. Many of you probably know about the flooding we had in June and there are a lot of homes without heat as winter approaches. So this adds to the load for us tin bashers.

So "ALI" sits and waits right now.

I have some idea's regarding her return, that I have to run passed DDT first, before posting here.
