I was in Taco Bell recently and saw a sign on the wall advertising their promotion of the smothered chicken burrito.  The picture on the sign showed one of their prepared and tasty looking burritos.

I thought to myself what a wise choice that was as it would likely sell more of the product than would a pic of a chicken with a pillow over its face.

The last time I went into a Taco Bell was to use their restroom.  A ride I was leading had the parking lot right next to the TB as the meet up location.  No, I wouldnt actually eat any of that stuff they try to pass off as food.  Even if they won that lawsuit, that "meat" does not taste like real meat.  Well as of about 12 years or so ago (thats how long ago its been since I ate at fast food places)

Many years ago I took an older co-worker to lunch one day. We went to a new Mexican restaurant, which excited him, cause he had never eaten a mexican cuisine before. When we were served, he just sat there and looked at his plate. I asked him if he was going to eat it and he said....it looks like it already has been eaten once!  uglystupid2

Well, it looks as if a semi-humorous thread was hijacked for a little "I'm too good for that" chest beating.

Allow me to let you all know where I stand.

Taco Bell food is not what I would call Mexican cuisine.  I would say it's fast food based rather loosely upon a Texas Mexican food pattern.

I ate the smothered burrito, but I chose the beef option.

I occasionally enjoy Taco Bell options as well as a large number of other fast food brands.  I do understand that some people have good reasons for avoiding some brand names of prepared meals.  I've no problem with that.  To me food is food.  Some tastes especially good some does not.  Some tastes vary greatly between individuals.  I'm okay with that.  It's the company at the meal that's important to me.

If anyone thinks he or she is a better person for where he or she will not eat, he or she is in severe danger of dropping quite significantly in the importance of his or her opinion in my eyes.

I would never, ever use a public restroom in a commercial facility without finding some way to do business with them.  That is simply one of my standards.  I understand not everyone holds those values and I'm okay with that.  I do think I'm a better person for my adherence to my standards.  If I didn't think so I wouldn't have those standards.

I've never suffered greatly from food poisoning, but if I did I'm sure it would impact some of my preferences.

Nicely done, Serk.  One of my favorite misinterpretations of the language as well.

My advice to some would be, "Get off your alleged high horse."  A little walking time may serve a lot of us very well.   Wink

P.S.  I have no real problem with choked chickens.  It's just not a practice that I personally choose to exercise.   Smiley

The are two Taco Bell's on the Texas side of Texarkana. One is usually pretty good, the other has been lousy every time I've gone there. The missus and I like their Taco Salads. The bad one always tastes like the Taco bowl was fried in very stale grease.  crazy2
We've had a couple of "real" Mexican places, but unfortunately they don't last long. And surprisingly to me, most of the group I hang out with don't like the "real" Mexican, preferring "Amigo Juan's." I like Amigo Juan's too. But occasionally I like something with poultry and cilantro.

I grew up in the food industry.  at the age of 9 until 23 my parents had an Italian restaurant so I've had my fear share of dealing with people and the public in general.  probably explains why i'm so cynical to people.

I've seen people get the stomach flu, and blame it on "our" food!!  I've seen drunks, puking 'cause they had drank a keg of beer, and blame it on "our" food.  (drunks in themselves are a whole nother story!!)  I've seen people have allergic reactions to a spice, and yes, I guess that's "our" food, but THEIR problem!!  much like the new peanut allergies that are common today.

so, when a person says they "got sick" on so and so's food, it makes me wonder if they had issues before they ate, and if it really was the restaurants food, then why weren't there more people confronting the management?

there were a lot of good stories.  one I liked was the woman that wanted to get a free meal by placing a hair in her soup, problem was, my mother had white hair, my father was bald, and the hair was black!!  same as hers!!

BTW, I like taco bell too......

The "smothered chicken" was a cute play on words.

I don't eat fast food.  doesn't mean I think i'm any kind of better person for that decision, just the way I eat.  don't really care what other people eat, but I do have opinions about healthy and not healthy.

I do like Mexican food and here in SOCAL there is an abundance of it.   cooldude

The only fast food restaurant I won't use any more is Arbys. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some Arby's roast beaf sandwich. I'll start salivating like one of Pavlov's dog's just thinking about it. But about 10 years ago, almost overnight, I became allergic to something in their sauce. It took three times before I made the connection. The first time, when my throat started to burn, it felt just like one of the sinus infection that I used to get starting. The next time I ate there it was worse, but I was still stuck on the sinus infection theory. The third time, it got bad enough that I had trouble breathing and I finally made the connection.
I could probably eat the sandwich without the sauce, but meh! That's the part I like most.
* SIGH * Miss me some Arby's

Foo... you don't have to be "too good" for anything to prefer the food that Mexicans themselves eat
over the stuff that is served in the generic Mexican restaurants that cater to Americans... not too long
ago I started eating at a little hole-in-the-wall grocery/diner in Clayton where most of the people
speak Spanish... until then I had no idea how good a taco could be...

As an aside, I was reading in the Bible where you're not supposed to eat stuff that
was strangled... I wonder if smothered counts?

I had no problem using the restroom without eating any food as many on the ride did order food.  I'm pretty sure I had a coffee there earlier (hence the need for the restroom) before any riders showed (that's my usual M/O), but it was at least 10 years ago so I'm not sure.

As far as being too good for any type of food.  Nope, I have eaten crickets and squirrels, bunny rabbits, cats, dogs and snakes, squid and even some okra once.  When we are out with the grandchildren it does happen that I am obliged to pray for protection from the occasional quarter pounder, but that doesn't mean I consider it food.  (and it doesnt happen more than once a summer)

I too enjoy the company more than the food at most restaurants, but if the company happens to be at a fast food joint, I will usually be enjoying the company with a cup of coffee in my hand.

It took a around a year, but no fast food grease, no soda, no sweet tea and I noticed a great increase in energy level, concentration and digestive comfort.  So its really not possible to try to guilt me into returning to the poisoned well after proving to myself how great it is to be free of that crap!

I'm up here in NW Iowa.

I'd say within the last 10 years we've had a number of Mexican style restaurants open up in the towns in this area. Before that, I'd have gone to a Taco Bell. But if I'm in the mood for Mexican food there are just so many better options than the fast food type. And some can be just as fast as the fast food places.

Chinese buffet places all over too. Tough to pass them up too.

As an ex over the road 18 wheeler jockey I've had more than my fair share of "stuff" that is passed off as "food". But I will say this-in all my years out there I've gotten food poisoning twice. Used to have what was once called-a cast iron stomach.  2funny The only fast food jernt I can not spend money in or eat their food is Burger King.  Sad And NO it weren't one of the times or places I got sick. We have a Taco Bell in West Plains Mo. that I like going to once in awhile. Smothered barn yard buzzard-good un Carl.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Been food poisoned twice, once in a burger king, and once in a Turkish pizzeria where I ordered chicken.

That was a big mistake.  They didn't have any chicken on hand, but one had been run over in the street outside a day or two earlier (actually it had been run over several times... it was mighty tender).   I guess they thought if it was cooked long enough, it would be OK.  It wasn't.  I lost 10 lbs in one week and was sicker than I ever care to be again  (closest to death I've ever been).  All I could take in was water and strong tea (no sugar).  I could not eat chicken for a number of years after that.

Lesson learned...... when eating at a specialty restaurant, order the freakin' specialty (or do ya feel lucky, punk?).

You could probably use a really small pillow (how big is a chicken face, anyway?), stage it just right, and people would think the chicken was just taking a nap... equal opportunity diner here, helps in maintaining my bulk. No restaurant food poisoning yet but there's always tomorrow... You all make me laugh!

My wife always likes to get some "chicken fingers" when we go grocery shopping. The Publix supermarkets here in Florida all have great delis and we often make use of them. But when she gets those "fingers" I get this mental image of huge chickens running around with stubs on their feet and not able to scratch out a meal in the henyard.

As for the use of a restroom, I'm with Carl on this. I just don't feel right using their facilities without giving them some of my business. As for Taco Bell, after my heart attack last year and upon my "parole" from the hospital, I was told I could eat anything I wanted. I asked for two tacos from Taco Bell near our house. After more than a month of hospital food it was like manna from Heaven. (my aplogies to the Iraelites)  Wink
