almost felt like it was running out of gas. runs fine when it gets up to speed, but when you accelerate the harder you hit it the harder it 'stutters' vibrates. never felt this before, seems odd it runs ok at whatever speed just when hitting the throttle. drive line? U-joint? 35,000 miles needs a new rear tire, not going to count that out.

just tore the carbs apart and soaked the parts last month, ran much better since then.

petcock?

thanks in advance.....

Your description of the stutter would kinda/maybe indicate a fuel delivery/petcock issue. Are you still using an original style ?
To me a vibration would indicate something else, but, everyone has their own description of things.

when I hit the throttle in neutral, no problems. replaced the petcock years ago. will check up on it.

I would take a look at the Ujoint and driveshaft splines. Could be a fuel delivery issue, but, with the previous work, who knows. Check the vent tube for kinks cooldude

Really dirty air filter? Just can't get enough air on the heavy throttle maybe? Just a wild guess.

felt like it was starving for gas, but, only does it's thing in gear.

makes me think drive line. however I did just do a el cheapo oil change and went from a steady synthetic diet to regular dino oil. shouldn't make a difference right?

just remember that reving in neutral puts no load on the engine . If you feel a fuel feed starvation while motoring , that's probably what it is .

Not sure what a "running out of gas" shutter feels like but otherwise what you're describing sounds like a bad plug wire.
I'm just remembering from my old car mechanicing days.

Mine had a similar vibration (under load) and I adjusted and synced my carbs and that helped tremendously.
Since you did carb work I take it you did that.
How about a possible vacuum leak?
