How to save stations on interstate radio?

Just got a 99 interstate and the radio is driving me nuts. Auto search only hears the wrong channels. How can I force it to save my channels?
Thanks for the feedback. The push tune and hold for the beep sounds right. I have made it create that noise but did not know what I was doing. I also am looking at the XM radio option. Most of the XM that I have seen do not do weather well. What XM has been used on your bike? I also am thinking it should be portable and work in my cars that have MP3 inputs.
One of the first things I will do is replace the factory speakers as they are old and suck wind.

As I read my owners manual the use of the radio isn't crystal clear to me. But
here is how is states to preset stations:
1. push the BAND/MEMO lever up to select AM or FM
2. push the BAND/MEMO lever down as many times as necessary to select the channel you want
3. push the CH.MEMO button. The Ch indicator will begin blinking
4. push the TUNE lever to find the station you want
5. push and hold the CH.MEMO button until you hear a beep. the indicator will stop blinking and the preset channel will be visible in the display

I have a scanned pdf of that portion of the owners manual for the radio if you don't have it.
The scan feature of the IS radio is for travel. It searches for and saves the 6 strongest signals in the Am and FM band, and you can cycle through your presets for those saved stations. They aren't always nice, but it is sound when you are traveling. It does NOT over write you saved presets. When you turn the scan mode off, your presets are back.
Your presets, need to be saved one at a time, like when you program any modern digital radio. Find a station you like, turn on the memory save mode, choose the preset #, and save. It's been a few years since I wrote off my IS, but the GW isn't much different than this too.

I agree that finding a radio station can be a real problem especially if you travel a lot. I spent more time looking for a decent station than listening to one. Also trying to find a radio station continuously take your attention off the road where it should be. I solved my problem by wiring a satalite radio onto my bike. Now I can listen to the music I want and never have to look for a new channel every 20-30 miles down the road. Best assessory on my bike by far. I know I haven't answered your question about the presets but this is how I solved the frustrating problem I had with the radio. The satalite radio plugs into the auxillary port and runs through your radio AUX. This way the automatic volume control and regular volume control works of the regular radio controls and plays through your bike speakers. I power it by a cigarette lighter adapter.
