On the tach, the "S" light is illuminated on this 97. What is that light for and how do I turn it off...if possible??

It's to let you know that the side stand is still deployed. It should go out once the stand has been retracted. If it doesn't you could have a switch problem down at the stand.

If you have a switch problem, I would expect the engine to die when you put the bike in gear.

I put the kick stand up, sometimes the light goes out, other times it stays on. The bike does not ride or run irregular when the light stays on.

Put the bike in a wheel chock so it will stand up straight without any pressure on the sidestand. Then take a look underneath to see if the switch itself is loose. Removing the switch, if needed, is not too difficult, it's getting to the plug on the other end. It's in front of the battery box and you need 14" fingers and little hands to get to it. Bit of a PITA.

Another point to check is that everything is tight in the boot full of connectors under the right side neck cover.  I had similar symptoms after riding all day in the rain.  The "S" light circuit was getting sneak voltage that the switch really knew nothing about.

Be careful if you unplug the switch at the kickstand.  There are several metal "prongs" that will break very easily.  Or maybe mine did because the switch had been rotating some when the kickstand went up and down.
