I got another valk red and cream  great deal. po says it needs a alternator, I bought it. got home ,put a new battery in it and it wouldn't start looked here on the forum and found several things to check out. got to the fusible link and it was blown, changed it with the spare and wow she runs great. I pulled the neg cable off the battery and it stayed running at idle, should I still test alt? seems to run fine, will test a little more sat am  riding my new 2 me second valk, love these fat girls  thanks-------------carl

Pulling the cable off the battery...not a good idea or method to check the alternator. Just put a voltmeter across the battery with the engine running and it should read in the 14+ volt range when you twist the throttle. No danger of burning something out that way.

What Stuffy said,, DO NOT pull a battery cable to check the alternator.,, just asking for damage to electrical and electronic components. That fuse blew for a reason,,, I would examine the alternator even if it is charging right now. How many miles on the bike?
