Bike : Standard 2001
Shock absorbers: Progressive shock absorber 440 - 13" adjusted to max load
Rear tire: DS tire 205/55-16

I started with 33 psi in the rear tire and felt I was bottom out in bumps on the road when riding 2 up with luggage. Riding single it was no problem.
Going from 33 to  38 psi helped, adding more until 41 psi helped even more!

So , am I bottom out on the shock absorber ( as it feels like) , or is it the tire scratching something?
Will  nut cage modification help, you believe?

( I could probably go to 42-43 psi on the tire and solve the problem (?), but I believe I get less miles on the tire that way .....)

nut cage mod is about sidewall clearance..if your tire isn't getting rubbed on the sides you are good with clearance that nut mod would help with...sounds like shock issue to me

I have the same bike, same size rear tire but different shocks. I am running triumph rocket 3 rear shocks that have a heavier spring than my progressives. While they were set at #3 the nut cage did rub on the tire occasionally. I only got 20K out of the soft compound tire I had been using but it wore across the entire tread running at 41 psi. I have since changed to a 205/60/16 Sempiro GT radial I got from Discount tire that  has a nice rounded profile, running at the same 41 lbs.  It is a harder compound and should last me a lot longer than the previous tire. However, I did not do the nut cage mod and run the shocks on #5 and do not ride two up. If you are running two up I would recommend you do the nut cage mod. I had no problem with any rubbing on my 4000 mile trip to Inzane and on to Illinois and did run into some really rough roads. I was loaded pretty heavy though with a carry all rack attached to the hitch carrying about 100 lbs, fully packed cloth bags, a duffel bag, tent, sleeping bag, two mats (since I'm old). If you are actually bottoming out you might think about going to air shocks for the infinite adjustability.

As mentioned earlier the nut cage is for clearance, but if you tire is going far enough up into the fender it will rub somewhere.

Yeah,,,,shock issue probably,,,but why do 41 psi makes it better than 33 psi?

I'll probably do the nut cage mod anyway,, ( why not? Wink  ) ....

My former tire was the same as this one ( Vredestein Sportrack 3) ,a soft, comfy one with a rounded profile which makes it feel more like a MC tire.   I run 41 psi in it and had a wear in the middle of the tread ( indicating to high pressure) .,,hence i wanted to try a lower pressure..
