My 2000 GL1500C broke down. The shop tells me that I need a new alternator. Honda wants $600.00 for it. Anyone know where I can get an aftermarket one? Thanks.

Often it is the a short cut in the windings that is the fault...
They/ you  can measure the windings to find out.
If that is the case, replacing the winding can be a whole lot less bucks.. depending on who'll doing the job..

If your bike have lots of miles, then more things can be well worn and a replacement of a complete alternator is smart !?

From JeffK's generic parts page.  FYI I used one of these alternators on a friends bike.  You just need to take the three screws out that hold the sections together and spin the front cover 120 degrees so the mount matches the one you removed.  Worked fine and cost a lot less.

'97 Goldwing Aspencade
 Part # is 31100-MT2-015
"The terminal & plastic insulator are different where you connect the alternator battery wire. You have to take off the capacitor that is mounted on the Gold Wing alternator and rotate the front housing to match the holes from the Valkyrie model so that it will fit."

As per Ron Ayers Parts Fiche, alternator 31100-MT2-015 fits on the 30 following GL1500 Goldwing models :

Honda GOLD WING GL1500 (1988 to 1990)

Honda GOLD WING ASPENCADE GL1500A (1991 to 2000)

Honda GOLD WING INTERSTATE GL1500I (1991 to 1996)

Honda GOLD WING SE GL1500SE (1990 to 2000)

Most folks, including me, have been very satisfied with the service provided by Ken Heming at M.A.R.S.  The website mentions only Goldwings and not Valkyries, but if you tell Ken you want a Valkyrie Alternator he will rotate the parts (as described by Thunderbolt above) to the correct position so the alternator will be good to go when you get it.

It would be worth it to find someone local to you to help diagnose the alternator using the instructions in the shop manual.  The thing that often fails on the alternator is the rotor, #20 on the parts diagram linked to above by Bone, which is shown as $140.24 HDL price, $191.71 suggested retail.

I would have the shop show me the bad alternator output. Have them put a voltmeter across the battery and start the bike. If low...or no...voltage, then probably so. It should register 14+ when you increase the RPM.

May be worth looking at brushes, too... They're less than $10 for the pair.

I've been very well pleased with my Goldwing alt. it was $235. from HDL and that was including the charge for overnighting it to me. Been on the bike for 71 thousand miles so for.

You may consider a local alternator/starter rebuild shop. I had mine rebuilt locally. Took them a couple of hours only and I was fixed up. They didn't seem to have any issues finding parts, assume a lot of internals are common to other alternators.

I took mine (Valk GL1500CF) to my automotive electronics shop and they ordered me a replacement for under $300. Don't know the model, but it's a Toshiba something that runs a Mitsubishi or Mazda. Got it the next day and installed it. Works great.

Fred, do have a part # or anything . That would be a great alternative to the Honda part.

Sorry, been busy. I didn't get a box, and the unit is installed, but the invoice says it's 25-1152 Alternator.

+1 Good advice. I found a local shop here in Jacksonville that from the looks of the inside of the shop could rebuild anything. I never seen so many different alternators. Only drawback is these small independent rebuilders are becoming scare. He rebuilt my Taurus alt while I watched. He said he rebuilt 10 to 15 a day. And could handle bikes too.
