Need your guy's help again! I've got a 1999 tourer California model, I have already installed a pingle non-vacuum petcock, removed the canister when I installed the leave on lift adapter. Today I did the De-smog using the redeye shiny chrome kit, I also installed new redeye O-rings under the intakes and put new vacuum caps on all six nipples on the intakes. I was careful not to mess with the carbs. I made sure all six intake clamps were tight! I also removed the vacuum lines that used to go to the no. 6 intake thru a air valve of some kind and up to the old factory petcock. Before I did the De-smog my Valkyrie started and idled smooth. When I tried to start it up afterwards It was hard to start, It would high idle with the choke on but if you touched the throttle it would die. After I ran it for a minute and shut off the choke it would die. Giving it throttle I could get it to start but again it would not idle, I then started it again using throttle and kept it reved up and adjusted the idle knob it would idle somewhat but it wouldn't stay set and would eventually die. I was able to ride it and it seemed O.K. once I got it going. Also I know what the six hoses that come off the bowl drains into a manifold is for, but what is the one above it do with six hoses coming into a six into one manifold and then into some kind of valve which then goes into a hose which comes down along with the gas tank vent hose? Do I leave that one alone? Any help would be greatly welcome Thanks!

The six hoses that go into a plastic combiner are drain tubes for the carb bowls. You can leave them alone. There are 18 clamps on the intake tubes that get loose. You have a vacuum leak somewhere, that's why your bike won't idle. Go over each new plug that you installed and make sure the connections are tight. I have never done the desmog before, so I only have limited advice, but, this is a good place to start. Are you sure you turned the petcock on before you started it? Just a thought cooldude

I have a California 03 that was desmogged, I tied all the smog nipples at the top sides of the carbs together using a plastic "T". See the diagram for what I did, the bike runs great. Also check that all the other plugs you installed doesn't have a vacuum leak. You can install new lines on the carb drain outlets if you want to. If the drain valves are closed, that shouldn't cause a problem. Sounds like you have additional vacuum leaks somewhere. I like to leave my bikes as stock as possible, this one was desmogged in bad way when I got it, not a fan of the desmog process.

The diagram is just for the extra vacuum lines of a California carberator.

Sorry I misspoke, three clamps per carb. 18 total, I was careful to tighten them all. Had a rough time getting the ones on top of the carbs on the left side down on top flush but finally did. Getting the air box back on was rough but not as bad as I thought it would be.

Red Diamond, So you tied those six vacuum lines together and got rid of that upper plastic manifold and the air valve under it and the hose that used to go to the canister?

I don't know what your 'de-smog' kit consists of, never used one. But, it sure seems as though you have a vacuum leak. Just make sure to properly cap all 6 intake nipples and plug the exhaust ports. It sounds to me as though you didn't quite get the airbox installed correctly. The best de-smog article has been written by our very own Normand [ Quexpress] and can be found in shop talk. Are the new intake o-rings installed correctly, its easy to get one pinched.

Pastmast, take a look at this link in Shoptalk http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/smog.htm.  Cali bikes have 6 extra ports coming off the top that are for air "purge". They should be plugged I believe. Yours are probably going down by the drain tubes and have a check valve installed in line. Perhaps the check valve has failed.

You can put more icing on the cake by resychronizing your carbs. Did you stop a vacuum leak(s) that let your bike run better?

Yes I've had problems all summer, I never had the air box off before, so I figured if I had to take it off I might as well De-Smog her. I have a California model which has extra junk to leak. I capped off 13 lines, and capped off the six exhaust ports. Now the only thing under my carbs are the drain lines from the fuel bowels. And now the Valkyrie runs better than before. Sometimes owning a Valkyrie is a challenge. But when she's running good there's nothing better! Thanks to all of you and this website for the insight.

Here's all the stuff we took off my 1997 California model Standard when we did the shiny desmog:

Hey I know that cracked concrete slab!

I have now done 4 De-Smogs and had a little WTF on ach of them nothing real bad or harmful and it was found and fixed right away. On Mappers the last one I helped on I got excited and after synching the carbs I left off all 6 vaccum caps and of course no idle.
Daddie O's we debated a long time whether to cap or not cap those purge lines on the top O's each carb we went with caps. Worked fine. Mike4Sho had a real high idle afterhe left my place funny thing was it didn't happen right away it too a few block for it to act up walked him through adjusting main idle screw all better.
Now on mine I used the semi stealth kit and now have change over to the shinny desmog kit but I have one more exhaust plug to install and one carb that acts like it has a bad or clogged jet. But the carbs synch perfect.

Glad you found your oops and got it fixed.

there is allways but not the safest way to see if its a vacuum leak spray a quick burst of starter fluid near each carb and see if the idle rpms jump higher but only do this on a fairly cold engine if its real hot things could get ugly fast remember its like throwing gas on a open fire but if the idle goes up there is a air leak in that area and go from there
