Here a while back I messed up bad putting in a 6 degree trigger wheel. Bent 3 valves. Got new valves and head gasket. Put her back together just as described in the Clymer manual. Bike runs like a brand new one.

BUT,, now the same side rattles when I start her up. Sound decreases as it gets warm but never goes completely goes away. I removed the valves cover, everything is properly tightened. Valves are set right. The only thing I noticed right off is the inside of the valve cover and all the valve train parts were NOT soaking wet with oil. How can this be ???   Sad

define "soaking wet" sitting level the oil leaks back down the slant in the valvecover. I have never took a cover off and seen "soaking wet"

without a "HANDS ON" situation its hard to say what the problem is

You could put down a tarp, cover up the rest of the bike and fire it up with the valve cover off.ohc engines will sling a lot of oil in short period of time.I've never had the head off of a valk, but on many engines it's possible to put the gasket on upside down and block off holes that should be open.

Is The HeadGasket Installed Correctly?

I BelieveThere Are Some TabS ThatAre Visible ThatMay Give You A Indication Of Correct Installation  Without Tearing It All Apart.

What Skinhead said. I think it could be possible [ can't remember, its been too long] that the head gasket could be installed incorrectly. If you decide to start it while the valve cover is off, expect to rustproof the rest of the county !
Regarding your noise, don't know without hearing it. It could be an exhaust leak. Getting these gaskets to seal can be a real PITA sometimes.

Looking at a head gasket on ebay.....just can't install it incorrectly.....if you manage to do so  you shouldn't be working on a bike...or a mouse trap or in a flea circus or ..... 2funny 2funny 2funny crazy2 crazy2 crazy2 crazy2

I would remove the valve cover and crank it up....if its as dry as you indicate, there wont be much of a mess and could immediately point you to the issue....

Can the pair valve cause a knocking sound in the valve cover. Everything looks perfect.
