Newish Wal-Mart near me, Spanish is the default, English is the afterthought in small letters under it... http://tinyurl.com/6ewh2ySorry, I welcome LEGAL immigrants with open arms. If you come here legally, and want to become an American, you're welcome. If you come here illegally, or if you want to bring Mexico HERE, then what's the point of coming here?? I know, I'll get branded as a xenophobe for that comment, but I think it's pretty reasonable to ask a guest to learn and use the language of the land... (Better be careful, or in a generation that same statement will be said to us, complaining about why won't we old timers learn Spanish, dangit!)

About 2 years ago I was in an accident on my Valkyrie 3 blocks from my house. I was laying there on the pavement and three people ran up to me , I said Call 911, their answer was Que? It took until the 4th person who came to my aid for some one to understand what I was saying! That can put the fear of God into you. Just in case it's Nuevo, Uno, Uno. The lack of language skill by most illegals can hurt you.

My parents are both from Italy and they came here in 1953. They had to take some extremely hard classes before they could become American citizens. Many of their friends were sent back to Italy because they didn’t stand up to the requirements to become an American citizen, and actually for along time after they had gotten their citizenship they were still afraid that something might happen that would send them back.
We were at a restaurant in Chandler AZ and a waitress was having a hard time with the busboy, he didn’t want to clean her tables, he just wanted to collect the tip. Well, he would act like he didn’t understand her. So I ask my father why wouldn’t you want to learn the language of the country you’re in, and to at least try to communicate in the local tongue. My father told me that when he came to America he learned English, and that most likely the busboy speaks English also, but is playing stupid so that he doesn’t have to work that hard and is using the language barrier as an excuse to not clean her table.
Believe me, when you go to a Mexican border town, all the merchants know English! ALL OF THEM! Now, why is it that when they cross over the border, they forget?
My girls speak Spanish, not really good, but good enough to know what they’re saying at Wal-Mart. Good enough to know when they might be getting ripped off when we go to Mexico. The fact of the matter is this; our government doesn’t want to close the border. Make yourself smarter, learn their language and freak the crap out of them when you tell them to learn our language in spanish!

Strong Eagle's whining and complaining about how bad the US is is depressing. I am sure glad MOST of us like our country. Of course, we could LEAVE like Strong Eagle, then criticize it from overseas. MP

I’m pretty sure everyone on this board knows that “strong eagle” is an idiot. He only throws his opinion in to get under your skin, do yourself a favor and totally ignore the guy. Replying to his posts, or rants is a waste of your typing.
Like my father always said; “You can’t argue with an idiot” I’ve found that to be the truth.
An idiot is an individual that believes that their way is the only way, and everyone else is wrong because they’re not as smart as he is. Dewayne Herbert, aka strong eagle of Houston Texas, is that person.

I wonder if a version of this statement was what the British told our forefathers? It also occurred to me this morning that we could eliminate all "crap" posts by e-mailing them directly to Strong Eagle first so that he could edit or dispose of them properly.

I appreciate all Strong Eagles comments, so that I do not have to figure out for myself what are the "crap" posts. Much easier for me. Wait, that is also what he wants government to do for all of us. Think for us, do for us. So much simpler. So easy. Sit back, and let Uncle Obama take care of us. Thinking and doing for one's self is so hard! I am glad Progressives like S. E. are here to do that for all us dumb commoners. MP

Whine, whine, whine... doesn't it ever get tiresome? Instead of responding in an adolescent manner, How about a rational well thought out response defending why you think that English should NOT be the language of America. Or why you think that immigrants should not be required to learn English before becomming an American citizen.

Last I heard, the United States does not have an official language, therefore, requiring people to learn to speak English is not technically possible. In order to become a citizen, I believe it is necessary to learn English.
I guess it's a holdover of our melting pot status, but we don't have an official language.
In a large number of countries, the people speak more than one language. Here, not so common.
When we go visiting outside the US, we expect everyone we deal with to speak English. I was in Quebec recently (official language in that province is French). And everywhere I went, the people operating the check in desk at the hotels, the people working in restaurants and gas stations, etc., all spoke English.
But when foreigners come to the US to spend their tourism dollars, they make an effort to speak English here, instead of expecting all the clerks, etc., to speak German or French ....
Yes, pressing 1 for English is annoying, but it's a simple thing to do to help other people conduct their business in terms they can understand.

I have lived and traveled in foreign countries. I felt obligated to at least attempt to learn a few simple common phrases. Granted, if I were on a whirlwind tour of many different countries that would be almost impossible. But, I would try to have some type of translation book or device. My problem isn't with visitors to our country, it is with people who wish to immigrate here legally or illegally (a whole other can of worms) and refuse to learn the language. That is just wrong! I wouldn't dream of immigrating to another country without making an attempt to learn the language. I understand why business has caved in to Spanish speaking people who don't speak English. It's simple their numbers are great and business wants their money. It is more than a minor annoyance to press 1 to continue in English. Why shouldn't they have to press a number to continue in (insert language of your choice here)? I didn't realize that English wasn't the official language of this country. I thought that at one time a person had to demonstrate the ability to read and write in English before they could pass their citizenship test. I'll have to research that one.

Most that I've listened to say Press 1 for English, Marque el numero 2 para Espanol. So the non-English speakers do have to press a button as well. It routes their call to someone who can communicate effectively with them. I did say "In order to become a citizen, I believe it is necessary to learn English." This statement was based on a conversation recently with a new American citizen.

In a large number of countries, the people speak more than one language. The international business language is English. That is why children in other countries are taught English. I work for a German Drug company with affiliates all over the world. All communication between affiliates around the world is conducted in English. While there is no true official language in the US, business, politics, and higher education is conducted in English. In order to be a productive citizen in the US, one should do all he or she can to learn and use English. The most basic, and most important right we have as US citizens is the right to vote on local matters directly and to vote for representatives to vote for you nationally. If you can't speak or understand English, how can you possibley be a functioning, contributing citizen in this country? How can you take advantage of this most important and wonderful right, the right of choice. If you can't speak English, you are hurting yourself and holding yourself back from furthering yourself in a society that you chose to be part of? Those that come here and choose not to learn English are choosing to not participate.

Rubber Ducky, it is the world we live in because people like you don't care. Name one other country (maybe Quebec or somewhere in Canada) in the world where you have a language choice when you call any customer service or business. Bilingual signs, yes in many places- bilingual phone support-nope. Unless your ancestors came from England (or a British possession), they had to learn English. There was (and are) no press 3 for French, press 4 for Lithuanian, press 5 for German, etc. It is flat wrong to cater to those who won't learn the language like most of our immigrant ancestors. And they did so as a choice because they chose to come to a better place for themselves and their descendants, they worked for what they got and did not extend their hand for a handout. Come back and visit your homeland and see what is really going on. You do not get much of a real view hiding overseas.
