Author Topic: questions for some of you guys with kendon or drop tail trailers  (Read 2549 times)

do any of you guys know what kind of mileage you get towing your trailer with and without a valk on it ?

i have a 2013 chevy duramax and a 6 by 12 foot flatbed trailer, single axle, with a steel floor. it weighs 1,000 lbs. when i put either my valk (682 lbs) or my valk trike (1200 lbs) i get 14.6 MPG as opposed to 18.7 mpg with no trailer. today i had occasion to tow the trailer empty a bit over 100 miles and got the same 14.6 mpg. weird !

i want to either buy a kendon single bike trailer to tow the valk out west a couple times a winter, or a drop tail single. what has your experience been with either of these trailers and if you own one what kind of mileage are you getting towing it.

I have an Air-Ride big enough for my Trikes and to be honest, I never give a crap about mileage.

I can tell ya one thing, my Big Ram with a Hemi averaged 13.7 MPG over 12,000 miles.   That was towing and not towing.   The highest MPG I got was 15.9 on one tank and the lowest was 9.6.      9.6 was when I was high balling it for Vegas.

My Dakota with the Mercedes engine (V-8), overall for 17,000+ is 14.9.     Highest was or is 25.6 and lowest was 9.1.

Neither of these 2 vehicles have been babied.   I drive them just like I ride the Chevy Trike or the Valkyrie Trike, Balls to the wall.



This trailer is all air suspension.   You twist a valve and the deck lays on the ground.    Ride on and set the front tire in the chock, step off and put the 4 straps on it and while doing that turn the air valve and it will rise to traveling mode.     Sure beats all the ramps I have used in the past.   It you can see straight, you can not miss the lowered deck.

Ive got a two bike Kendon. I tow it with a 2009 Dodge Charger with the 5.7 V8.
If I take the large windshield off it helps a lot with mpg but more importantly you dont feel it "pulling" against the car.   At 70mph with no trailer I get around 27mpg due to cylinder deactivation. Towing with both the Valk and a 750 Shadow i get about 19mpg but the cylinder deactivation does not kick in.

If you have a tall tailgate say 4 ft and even if it is exspanded metal it will effect the milage. Try removing the tailgate and pulling it I bet the milage will change.

  yep, it  has a 4 foot expanded metal ramp onit, i bet thats it. no matter i ordered a new drop tail trailer this afternoon, should solve all the problems.

The ramp is it.  I built an 8x10 snowmobile trailer a few years ago and had a 4ft tall, full width ramp of expanded metal.  I saw lots of other trailers like that and didn't give it a second thought.  When we tried towing it with out V6 Equinox, we couldn't even get above 55.  My Ram did better but you felt like it back there. 

Took the plasma cutter to the hinges and it's great now.  I just strap a pair of wide aluminum ramps down instead of that big flip down ramp.

well, the only problem with that is taht it is used  during the winter if i needed to pull my trike out west, i needed the ramp to load the trike. now i have the 03 two wheeler that i will use in the winter and a single place drop tail trailer. life is good .
