This is what side cover should look like, my good side. (No gap at tank).




What it should not look like, my bad side. (gap at tank and side cover). I've slid mounting spacer around and still can't get a good fit. Where there instructions for those of you who bought these side covers? Are the spacers the same length on both sides (mine are)? Seems like spacer needs to be offset? Not sure where the problem is.

Try sliding the adj bolt toward the front of the bike...   Are you sure you have it in the right place???
Have never seen one that far off....

Looks like the rear of the cover needs to pivot down while the front mount stays in place or moves just  very little down.

Was the front end of your fuel tank raised in order to clear the velocity stacks on your carbs? Been there ... done that.  Smiley

Yes the front of the tank is lifted a 1/2 inch for the stacks. The right side fits fine though. 
I think the slot in the left side cover that the tank fits in needs to be ground-out to be larger. I can't get it to fit even with the mounting bolt removed.

I know that when I got mine (many years ago) both sides were 'rough' to say the least...  My painter took his time, sanding, shaping, and fitting, before he even thought about paint.

Maybe just some tweaking?  Undecided

IMHO if the frame mounting bolt is completely removed, you should be able to fit the top portion much better than you have until now.
Another possibility ... if your fuel tank is raised 1/2 inch, I believe that there would be a gap on each side ... but you don't on one of the sides. This tells me that the fuel tank might not level (from left to right), or that the side covers are very rough (which certainly could be).
Note: There was a gap on each side of mine (I/S fuel tank ... raised 1/2 inch).

I think your on to something Blackdog. I'm going to try to grind out some of the side cover without ruining any of the visible paint.    Shocked  Shocked
