Is there a tool or a trick to adjusting a 440? I have tried turning them by hand and can't budge them.

don't use the honda tool, or you will scratch that progressive ( i did  Embarrassed )

with the hard bags in place, i can't move mine by hand.
i use a leather strap with handle to move them. it was sold as some basic oil filter wrench.

one hint : i colored one of the notches with my wifes nail polish, so that i know better when i made a full turn up or down.

i know some have disassembled the progressives, and added some washer, so that they are easier to set.
my 440HD are now set so that they are perfect for solo riding and when 2Up, so i don't need to bother with changing them a lot anymore.

love the 440HD.

They tend to 'stick' after some time.. Taking the weight off them helps, as does a strap wrench.. Marking them is also a good idea..

If you disassemble the shocks and put a thin plastic or nylon pad under the spring seats and lube the threads you will find a world of difference in the ability to adjust the shocks. Without the insert and just the lube it will go away after a short time. After doing this I have not had a problem adjusting by hand.

Just get a strap wrench with a rubber strap. You can adjust shocks easily with bags on.I believe I got mine from NAPA.
