Congratulations on your accomplishment! (We may want to hear again about the ride. ) I did the ride with an old riding buddy, Mike. I of course rode the mighty Valkyrie, and Mike rode a Honda 919. From Pueblo, CO. we left at 4am and headed due east to Garden City, KS. The temps were cool and we had the wind at our back. The Valkyrie got 39mpg on this stretch. From Garden City we headed south cutting across the Oklahoma Pan Handle, to Amarillo, TX. We started to get some cross winds but didn't pay much attention to it. From Amarillo we head west towards Albuquerque, NM. This is were the ride got interesting. We encountered massive headwinds. I could barely keep the Valkyrie going 75mph, and in doing so hit reserve in just 92 miles. The tractor trailers marched along doing 80+mph making it a very dangerous ride. As the semi's would pass we would get caught up in a vortex which wanted to either suck you under/along the truck or off the interstate. Without a doubt the ride from Amarillo to Albuquerque was the longest most exhausting ride I have ever done. From Albuquerque we headed north towards Santa Fe. We still had fierce winds, but they were now mostly at our backs. Had to put rain gear on outside of Santa Fe, and had rain to Raton, NM. Now night time the temps were dropping. Though no longer raining I left the rain gear on for warmth because it was 43 degrees going over Raton Pass. We really pushed it on the last leg of the trip back into Pueblo, arriving back in town at 11:30pm. I dedicated the ride to my Father who gave me his beloved Valkyrie. The Valk turned 40k on the trip. I know, I know that is just getting her broke in, but there are a lot more Iron Butt rides to do.

IIRC you're running a Vredestein Sporttrac right? Happy with it on the IBA ride on the slab?

Mark, you are correct I am running a 60 series Vredestein Sportrac 3. I originally tested the tire on a ride from Colorado to St. Louis, and was very happy with it. This will be my 2nd riding season on the tire and can additionally report on corning handling and wet riding. Both have been excellent. My son and I got caught in a good rain storm from Canon City to Pueblo. Had standing water on the road. While riding cautiously as any rider would do, I found the handling of the Vredestein to be great. And to answer your question.. it does very good on the super slabs. No wandering.. pretty uneventful. I can only compare to the GYTT that was previously on the bike. Night and day difference. I said it once and I will say it again. It preforms so well I have compared the handling to the likes of a good motorcycle tire.

Damn, JCK. I wish I could do this ride, but won't be able to make it. kiwi#9582, make sure to pack your rain gear, summer monsoons typically start around this time, and afternoon thunderstorms are likely in Southwestern Colorado (Durango) petty much every afternoon. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Durango&state=CO&site=GJT&textField1=37.27&textField2=-107.88&e=0Plan your mountain pass rides for the mornings and you will usually avoid them. Make sure you ride the Million Dollar Highway!

Sorry can't make it, wish I could but the weekend is gone with shop work.
I'm thinking Highway of Legends is on the Front Range, Hwy 12 between Walsenburg and Trinidad IIRC. I could be remembering wrong... BTW there are 2 alpine lakes (Bear & Blue lakes) SW of Cuchara, a several miles up a dirt road, over 10,000 ft, stocked with rainbows and brookies, bait OK, and improved camping. Great place to take a kid fishing the first time. Sometimes hard to get a camping spot as it's often packed with RV's with Texas plates. GRRRRRR.

Valk303 and I had a great ride yesterday. The ride had a little bit of everything which made it fun. I got to meet Valk303 for the first time and we got to get to know each other. He hadn't yet experienced Bishops Castle so we swung by there on our way back up north. I usually stop at Max's for lunch in Colorado city, but we tried something new and hit Odies BBQ on the east side of I-25, which was pretty good.
In Walsenburg we had a feller googling at the bikes. He thought they were a couple of Harleys! I pointed out the 6 cylinders, did the nickle trick, and gave the guy a new appreciation for bikes other than HD's. Another convert, maybe?
Sounds like Saturday was a busy day for us Colorado riders. Hope you all were able to have a productive day. Now get your priorities straight and go ride!

Labor Day Weekend ride. A group of us took a ride last year on Memorial Weekend through Gunnison, Montrose, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Creed, and back to Gunnison. Some of the folks on that ride have asked to do it again. Some that did not make that ride have asked to do it again. Anyone else interested? I have asked Seth to set up the same motels that we used last year. I hope we are not to late in my planning to get a few rooms for that weekend. As it stands we will roll Saturday morning the 31st. Stay in Montrose that night. Head over the Million Dollar Highway on Sunday and stay in Creed Sunday night. Roll home Monday. So far it will be me, Chase, McKenna, Ron, Pastor Dean, Austin, and Seth. I am sure Dick will want to go along with Hager the Horrible. Anyone else want in, Dave, Robin, Josh, Stan, Dennis???? I am hoping I can get Holiday, Buzzkill, and there crew to tag along.

Sounds like another fun time brewing! I'm looking forward to this. Not sure I'll do either or both nights lodging since this one is in my neck o' the woods. Sounds like The Country Lodge in Montrose will have some rooms for Saturday night (Aug. 30), they also have a cabin that sleeps four comfortably if it's available still 970-249-4567. Looking into lodging for Sunday in Creede now. We may have to settle for a couple ground zeros or look into Lake City, both will be very busy on Labor Day weekend. Woo-hoo! UPDATE: Creede was booked for the weekend, so I turned my attention to nearby Lake City. It will also be hoppin' there with "ATV Weekend" and the usual Labor Day touristas. Found a place with door front parking that should suffice. Robin (super friendly) said she has four or five rooms available for Sunday night (Aug. 31) that, "will fill". So, we need to Book 'em, Danno! I'm leaning at staying at least this night so I think I'll jump tomorrow. I told Robin she should expect calls from some VRCC folk in the next day or so. http://thenorthfacelodge.com/ (970) 944-5200

Glad you're coming Mark it'll be nice to meet you. Nothing blocked, but both places are aware of us. Both also will need to hear from us soon. The North Face only has something like 15 units total so we'd better grab some of those soon. Country Lodge has good breakfast, not sure about the North Face in Lake City. I may zip to and fro from Montrose to Gunnison and back Sat. night/early Sun. morning. Is an easy (fun) 60 miles for me. Damon didn't mention but we'll take Hwy. 92 along the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to Crawford, Delta and Montrose on the Saturday ride. Another plus!

I also am booked at The Country Lodge the night of the 30th, and The North Face Lodge the night of the 31st. Really looking forward to seeing those of you that I met at Damon's house last year again and getting some riding in! Tom

Got the rooms booked. June will be on her Magna. I plan to ride Deerslayer. BluByYou is getting neglected a bit this year... Haven't been in the San Juans for several years - used to ride there every summer with a bike club I used to ride with - but they are kaput now. Randy knows whereof I speak. We headquartered in Montrose most years. Maybe I should bring my blender so we can enjoy some markaritas. Maybe do a special blend a couple times with Patron & Grand Marnier! It's nectar, seriously. http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Markaritaville/markaritaville.html

Shoot! This ride is only 3 weeks away. If I start polishing the chrome now it just might be ready...
Took a ride with a nice couple who rode a HD. The wife looked at my bike and asked, "That is shiny! How long does it take to clean it?" To which I replied "3 months". I clean it all winter to get it ready for the summer.
