To be good, and to do good, is all we have to do.

Pueblo, Colorado

WWW
« on: November 12, 2013, 09:10:07 AM »

Over the summer I was in St. Louis. While there I found I could easily float the front wheel with extra throttle while pulling away from a stop.

I live in Colorado at 4,400ft above sea level. Here my 01' Standard won't float the front wheel.

My winter project is to get more power to be able to float the front wheel up here at elevation. I have done my homework, and I know my options. I would like to know if anyone above 4,000ft has done modifications with results, and advise me on the combination of mods. Below I will list out the modifications already made to the bike, and ask for advice on what to do next, or if it's even possible to get more power. And NO! I don't want to add a blower.

Modifications;
 - Super Trapp Exhaust & Headers (ST says good for 6hp & shaved 30lbs off the bike).
 - Air box mod (previous owner added 4 small holes on the side of the air box).

Advice to proceed on;
 - Jet?
  + Manu?
+ Jet Size (low & high speed)?
  + Needle shim?
 - K&N Filter?
 - Advance Timing
  + 4 or 6?
  + Trigger Wheel?
  + ECT Timing Mod?

Please reply only if you have had success with a combination of Mods that directly resulted in more power. I have read the threads and know the opinions. I am hoping to find a guy or two who can tell me exactly what they did to gain power or torque, or shine a light on something I am missing. Forgive me for wanting to skip the costly & time consuming trial & error phase.  Thank you much.

You missed porting and polishing the heads.

That works nicely with the exhaust you have.

How many disc's are you running?

Forget about the 6* Trigger wheel at your altitude.
If you really think you need a trigger wheel, go with the 4* at height.

What model ya working on?
I/S or the STD & Tourer.

Last question, why the reason for lifting the front wheel?
That is damn hard on fork tubes and steering head bearings.

RJ,

2001 Standard.

I don't really care about wheeling. Since the butt dyno tends to be inaccurate I thought setting the benchmark to float the front wheel at elevation would be a good guage.

I run 6 discs. The bike runs well and has no flat spots in the power band.

I did over look polishing the intakes and the head which is free and relatively easy to do.

Looking forward to your response.

DO NOT POLISH the intakes.

The head work I'm referring to is,
Remove heads
Take to a machine shop
tell them you want a port & relieve job done.
Should run ya about $400+, depends on the machine shop.
Then run 7 or 8 discs.

When I had the ST's I run 7 discs.

Hmmm.

Has anybody ever milled the heads a couple of thousandths?  ???

Wonder if the increased compression would help enough to make it worth while?

Of course, that's only if the valves will clear...   Sad   Cool   coolsmiley

Attic Rat can work with you on those details and he has a shop where he has been doing just that for a lot of Valks.

Amongst a lot  of things atticrat did to my Valk was milling the heads, porting a polishing plus putting interstate springs in carbs and increasing the high speed jets. I promise you if done right the performance is incredible. Almost scary until I got used to it. The springs made my standard more responsive. If you email him he is more than helpful about what can be done. He like a lot of the folks here really enjoy these great bikes. Rode HD for 4 decades, about 5 years with crotch rockets and even build my own. Nothing compares to these bike.. Oh yeah, thanks for all the help getting my led conversion to work right

So I talked to Attic Rat about his services. To clarify on an earlier statement his milling process does not increase compression. His entire package however does give you 20hp bump.

This would definitely help me achieve me goal. Does make me wonder if I would be trading off any reliability.

Anyone out there had Attic Rats work done and have had years of trouble free riding?
(To clarify I am not questioning Attic Rats work. I am questioning what 20 extra horses could do to the engine.)

I don't think I would worry too much about busting that engine, as long as ya don't put a blower on it without forged buckets.

Stock pistons won't handle a blower too long if ya wrap the crap out of it.

If ya no believe me, ask:

LaMont
PIBIT
and a few others.

What attic rat does to the bikes works. I am into a 2-3 year long run with mine no problems. the work does pump up the compression. Not real sure where you get the 20 added hp though. Mine went up about 15 hp but I am sure there can be more available with the work he is doing now. IMHO, you are getting your money worth having him do the work. I have known the attic rat for over 10 years and he knows this bike inside out.
When you talk to him make darn sure you tell him all the different mods you have done to your bike. He will need to know this.

I just wanted to comment on the work done by atticrat.  The work he does makes a big difference in the performance of the Valkyrie.  Mine is an Interstate and is a little heavier.  The added compression really wakes up the F6.  But with more compression you need to add some air and fuel.  The porting  work he does allows better air flow and new jets feed the fire.  He has also learned the what to do and what not to do in the porting process.  And the best part for me is the fuel mileage got better than stock.  All the work he does has come from quite a bit of research.  I rode from Tulsa back to North Carolina and with the cruise control the bike speed only only varied 1 mph through the mountains.  And as I said, the fuel mileage was in the mid 30's fully loaded.  I am very happy with the work atticrat did.

Oh one more question. I see that Webcamshafts.com can hotten up the cams. Attic Rat - Any experience with a hotter cam? Has anyone else done this?

I feel most all the aftermarket items that claim horsepower increases are mainly conjecture and wishful thinking.

Without before and after dyno reports, my statement rings true.

That is why in my original post I stated that I know the opinions. Additionally I haven't asked for aftermarket product because I know muffler bearings only affect the butt dyno. I asked for proven Modifications and thus far what has been discussed above has been backed up with actual dyno charts.

Still wondering if a cam mod has any proven effect.

Mr. Ricky-D:

My bike was dynoed in California at 100HP, 97 Tourer, then we installed Viking Pipes, redyno'ed same dyno, temp outside was 7* warmer than the 1st run.

This dyno showed I gained 6 HP, figures were 106 HP and 102 torque.

So, I'd say that these after market products DID GAIN HP.

Same engine we put it on the dyno in Paducah, temp was in the very high 90's and it dynoed like 91hp, 95 torque.

Mine is under RJ, Varmit was my competitor.      We had both run over 100 HP on the same dyno in Calif.

Sorry, I lost my dyno sheets when my computer external disk drive took a crap.

Spent about $300 trying to recover the data.   They got me some bits & pieces, but not everything.   This disk drive was my main drive for pictures, WORD documents and Excel files.     I was able to recover about 85% of the files.  The dyno reports and a ton of other Word Documents were lost.

I've found the best way to "float" the front wheel is put some extra weight over the back wheel, as high as safely possible.  The absolute best way is with a "top-heavy" passenger who is warned to hang on tightly!  I'll let others Google some photos of this method in use.

Awe yes the counter balance aftermarket performance part. I heavily researched this and was very close to adapting this aftermarket part to my bike. But then I realized that this aftermarket part can usually be picked up late at night at many of the local bars for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Though not a permanent attachment I am willing to make the sacrifice.

Attic Rat did his work on my bike 2 years ago and, like others here have said, I am very satisfied with the results.  He knows these bikes and these engines literally inside out and has already done all the trial and error to dial in his method so you are getting proven results.  Besides all that, he spent literally hours on the phone with me explaining the whats and whys of his process and answering questions before I took my bike to him - not many people are willing to go those lengths.  For example - if you want to know about cam changes for these bikes you can ask him and you will get an answer that is FACTS, based on his experience and the internal architecture of our engines and NOT opinion.  That is exactly what I did and was a big factor in my decision to take my bike to him.

Glad to see I am not the only atticrat fan here. We can talk dyno reading all day long. I was told my compression is about 12 to 1 and since this can be figured easily with the amount of milling done I have no problem believing that. Anyone that has ever ridden a bike with his performance package has no problem exclaiming that a stock valk is great, but after the package it is no to be believed. If you ever get it done be very cautious with the throttle and making turns until you get the feel of your NEW bike, please. Besides being good at is he really really loves doing it. If I was home everyday I could have been there and watched it all. Feel like a have a new bike.. Even put a decal on my carbon fiber pipes saying it was done by atticrat.  I done

u have to run premium now? 12:1 is pretty high for a non-computerized bike to run on 87 even though it has aluminum heads.

Before and after dyno charts?  If so, please share!  If not, and you have Bob do his meticulous work on your bike, here's your chance to scientifically quantify the aftereffects of the AtticRat mods:  Do some pre-mod baseline dyno runs first and some post-mod runs on the same dyno, then share them with the group.

Butt Dyno won't cut it.  Most of us acknowledge their inherent unreliability.

I love this site, but please no more E mail requests for dyno. The only things I really care about is the bike hauls ass. I go even faster on my top end because the bike breathes easier and all the other work that has been done. Might even reinstate the rev limiter to something less than 8500. Also, I don't know the specific things atticrat did to my jets or anything else. I didn't even ask. I just know that the package he gives is a complete one. No shortcuts. I am proud to ride this bike more than ever. Even put an advertising decal that I paid for on it. Will be staying away from site for a while. Over all you guys have a great service to valk riders everywhere
