When dis-connecting the battery is it negative wire first or positive or does it even matter.

I always do the negative first. That way if you slip with a wrench you will not complete the circuit between the postive and the frame. When re connecting you do the negative last.

This was the procedure we were taught in Auto/Diesel class in school.

Owner's manual says neg first.  A new battery install is first on my list this morning.
