Went out to move the bike today so I could clean out the garage. Had taken a ride yesterday with no issues. The bike ran great. Anyway, when I went to start her it was as if the kill switch was on. Except it wasnt. Plenty of battery, spinning over no prob. Except it just wouldn't fire. Then one loud backfire. Then same thing. Spinning and spinning with no fire. Plenty of gas in the tank. Only 57 miles since I filled it. I turned the petcock to reserve and tried it, and it took right off. Wth. Turned it back to the normal position, and it kept on running. Let it idle for 10 minutes, no problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Just a guess...
Vacuum line to the petcock??
I know you need to have a vacuum for fuel to flow. Maybe that's bypassed when on reserve??

Have you seen the petcock tube filter lately? Perhaps it's questionable and you had a floaty clogging up the main pickup hole.

weak battery.......jump it to the car to verify Yes. Do not have the car running. Weak batteries will spin the motor over, but not start. Do this first. No cost. MP

Since your Valk fired up after moving the petcock to reserve, then kept running when turn to on position, sounds more like a petcock problem. Possibly problems on the selector side as opposed to the vacuum side. Selector side can't easily be fixed.
Is the petcock OEM or ??. Does the petcock when in off position stop fuel from running. We need more info.

Don't do anything unless it does it again. Then do a load test on the battery and go from there.

Barring any unusual shut off procedure I would say that is a worrying issue.
It would be a normal happenstance if the bike had been sitting for a few weeks in warm weather but not if it was run the day before.
Only you can determine if it is a bad battery, but I thinking it's more of a petcock issue.
I suggest to keep alert to any more signs of starting problems and possible battery issues.
A check of the vacuum line to the petcock would be a good thing to do, although the vacuum feature does impinge both "run" and "reserve".

I don't think the problem has anything to do with fuel at all unless you ran the carbs completely dry the day before when you parked it. This bike will start everytime with the petcock turned off....just need fuel in the carbs.......the pop in the exhaust says fuel was in the cylinders and when it got at least one spark it fired what was in the exhausts. I would venture you likely have a marginal battery and it could not produce enough ignition energy to fire the plugs. You might also pull the connector off the top of the start relay (under the right side panel)and inspect the connector.

Yep, low battery. It didn't 'pop' until you let go of the starter switch tells me so. Got enough juice to spin her over, but won't fire a plug until you let off the switch. This is a very common issue with a partially charged battery.
