I'm seriously thinking about trying to track down an Interstate tank for my '97 standard. If I find one, is it a straight forward switch? I have all my badges and of course my gas cap. Anything else I would need? I know I might not find a black tank, so I would need to get it painted. How much bigger is the Interstate tank than a standard tank? Last, I have looked on our classifieds but I haven't seen one for sale, anyone have an Interstate tank they want to sell me?

I t will bolt right on in same mounting holes you use now. You may have a small issue with the nose of your seat needing to be bent up at the front to fit behind the tank. The I/S tank is taller at the rear (that's why it holds more gas) and the fit of your seat will be snug to it. You will need to block off the hole for the fuel guage sending unit or get an aftermarket guage. Do a search here-there is a lot of info on this subject. Dust off your wallet, it won't be cheap.

BigBF sells a sending unit blockoff kit for a missing sending unit for the fuel gauge. The seat will need a nose job. Some of the foam in the seat can be shaved and recovered. If you get a sending unit, Motosens sells a fuel gauge that's a direct wireup and works well.

Good luck finding an acceptable tank. If your Interstate tank search fails and you want increased capacity then check out the R&M Works belly tank. http://www.rmworksinc.com/

Thanks for all the info. I may contact R&M about a belly tank. I had forgotten all about that option. Thank you for the link. 3 extra gallons of gas would be wonderful, especially sitting so low.

Added an Interstate tank to my '97 Tourer without any modifications. Stock seat also fits without any mods to the seat itself. The only thing I did was put a small cut out of that clear, plastic shield they use to prevent rock chips on cars at the back of the tank where the seat touches. This keeps the seat from rubbing on the tank. As I had the new tank custom painted, I didn't want to mark up the paint.
I was told by many the fit of the seat would be quite tight. It wasn't.
Instead of buying the kit to block off the hole for the sending unit, consider buying the sending unit itself. This will allow you to add a fuel gauge down the road should you decided to go that route. Even if you don't, you can always put one in at a later date.
You'll love the extra fuel capacity too. One of those mods where, at least to me, there is no downside.

I have a belly tank on my standard. Formano did the instal. Best money spent. My range is jow about 240 miles and you don't notice the belly tank. Helps with the center gravity and no more worriss about the hydrolock. I say that over the tank unless you want a bigger range, then get both.

Yup the R&M belly tank is superb I wont bore you with details, but I've modded my installation so that it runs on gravity feed until she hits reserve then I just flick a switch to activate the belly tank fuel pump. This way I have an idea how much fuel I'm using, and also the pump isn't working full time The most mileage I've done with mine between fill ups [she's a 98 standard] is 285 miles with a litre to spare

That E-bay tank is nice.... It's almost too pretty to think about it painted black. I think I'll watch it and see where the price goes. Thanks for the link.

Can't use the belly tank on my bike because I have the Rivco center stand. But I do have a '01 IS tank with fuel sender and fuel gauge on my '03 Standard. Enjoying the extra miles between fill ups!
