I have the worst time searching for things on the Internet...

I need to go to a 195/65R16 or 185/65R16 size rear tire and cannot for the life of me seem to find one...

I currently run the General Altimax 205/60R16, but looks like it started rubbing after adding the Hitch Doc trailer hitch. I have already done the nutcage mod.

Where have any or you gone to pick one of these up??

Cheers,

Robert C.

I'm probably not the best one to respond cause I agree with your "worst time searching for things on the Internet" comment.  I thought it was just me!

Also, not being a tire "expert", I didn't know there was 185 or 195 tires.

I went from a 180 (Dunlop) to a 200 (Metz) on mine and am happy with the look.  And with my type of driving didn't see any difference in performance.

Have you done the washer modification?  That is where you add washers between the frame and fender on the right side to move the fender over and stop the rubbing.  I had to do that and it works.  Moved my fender about 1/2 an inch!

It's not you.  What you're searching for is the problem.

I don't think the tire is the problem - or all of the problem.  Sounds like something else is going on.  Does it rub all the time or only when a trailer is attached?  Where is it rubbing - sidewall or tread?  Do you have pictures?  Is it on the square nuts, #4 below?  If so, I've seen them ground a bit thinner.  Is it on the connection from the main harness to the taillight assembly?  If so, stiffer and/or taller shocks are in order if you can't reduce the weight on the rear end.

I found this one a while back:

http://www.performanceplustire.com/products/tires/searchType/searchBySize/tireSize/195_SLASH_65-16

but didn't order it. Instead I went with a Bridgestone 195/60 that I found locally at the Firestone store. I needed a tire and was afraid the hitch might get in the way. The tire has performed beautifully with about 20k on it now.

Hey Dennis, where you been my friend? Is that tire you posted about one of those soft compound tires, I didn't see any numbers in the specifications.

Eli, was fairly soft, wear rated at 400. Rounded corners, not much transition in corners.

I've ran a 60 series  205 since I've been running the DS and never had a problem rubbing with a trailer or not. I'ld look everything over good. I'm running a bridgestone now g-19 420 and somewhat rounded edges'

I use the  175/ R -16C  Austone Taxi Tire from Universaltire.com .It costs around $175.00 Shipped and is Wide Enough for Great Traction ,Round Enough to make Curves Enjoyable, and it Fits under the Fender without any Modifications. This tire is supposed to last 100,000 miles on a Full size Car ,(Taxi Cab), so there is no telling what kind of mileage I will get on the Valkyrie. I have had this tire on my Interstate for a year now and I love it. It also lowered my RPM's by 250 Rpm's.

Sorry folks.... Been a bit busy....

It mainly happens when I hit bumps or low spots n the road.... Was doing that before the hitch and that's when I did the nut cage mod....

Since the hitch it only happens like I mentioned above... I checked for any sign it's cutting into the tire and have not found anything... Can definitley smell burned rubber though, and it doesn't rub all the time..

I didn't think about the washer mod.. Will give that a go next week and see how that works...

Thanks for everyone's input..

Cheers,

Robert C.

It Sounds like you may need to Adjust your Shocks a little bit Stiffer, this should stop the Bottoming out .It is Probably Rubbing on the Metal Part that the Tail-light Harness is Protected by under the Rear Fender, where the Front and Rear part of the Rear Fender Meet.

Check under the fender where the two halves meet. There is a small metal box that houses the plugs for the tail lights. I had some shorter 416 air shocks and my would rub if bike was loaded heavy and two up.
