Tried to remove a spark plug from my newly acquired 98 tourer and could not get regular 5/8" plug socket to fit. What's the deal? Do I need a special socket or am I being stupid.

Yep its 18 mm. You should have a spark plug tool in the factory tool kit under the seat.

Not just any 18mm socket either, get a thin wall spark plug socket.  A thick wall may not fit.  Seriously, no joke.  I believe craftsman in the USA carries this.  If in Canada the Mastercraft socket fits okay.

You can use the ugly but functional wrench from the tool kit as previously mentioned.

Ride safe.
