especially Mother Nature.  Twenty odd years ago the volcano's lateral blast (300mph, 600 degrees?) pulverized the vegetation and sterilized the soil around Mt. St. Helens, today small trees and wildflowers abound.

Hard to beat Windy Ridge for a combination of fun road and unique scenery.

It'll be great to see the changes there between 2003 and now.

Gilligan, your pics look like the Johnston Ridge side which is a little west of the Windy Ridge ride.  I've got a few pics of that side from last fall, changes are coming slowly, but more vegetation all the time.

I recall receiving a train car load of lumber a few weeks after the eruption and there was at least an inch of ash on top. Wish I had kept some of it now.

A few more pics from Windy Ridge.

Wildflowers amongst the blowdown

Looking east at Mt. Adams

Those bumps on the north side of the valley used to be the summit of the mountain on the south side.

Mt. Rainier behind Spirit Lake, lots of trees still floating, deposited during the eruption.

RoboCop, I just looked at the rest of your pics. Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for posting them.

It is impressive what nature does. Anybody visiting here will feel very small.

I ran across this shot the other day and thought it was kind of a cool before/after pic.
