Was at Pep Boys and saw the Falken which i know several have ran but also saw the Definity HP800 (60K tire) 205-60-16. Good looking tread and rounded shoulder. 80. bucks at Pep Boys. Anybody have any experience with this on the rear?

NOT tyin to be a smart azz here BUT every cursed one of us that ride are test pilots. Thank you for that insight Daniel. If you like the looks of it $80.00 ain't really a too large a hunk of change these days. I'm on my 3d D/S choice-General Altimax-Falken Ziex 512-and now a Nexen 5000. Purchase it-run it-let us know WHAT you think about it and if it is liked-Might try that one next!!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I don't know.  It looks like a tire that goes on grandma's old Buick.
Here is what the Ziex 512 looks like.

See the asymmetrical tread pattern?  That is what I look for when deciding on a rear tire.

Here is the General Altimax.  I like this tread pattern too.

Agree with Hayhauler - that tire is downright plain vanilla. Borderline fugly.

I don't care for any tire that has a lot of voids in the outer two inches of tread, that just reduces the amount of rubber contact on the road and IMO induces more side slip because of the voids and sipes.
Here is my favorite tire, it is not symmetrical in tread design but it does not cause any cornering issue I can detect.
The tire on the left has 60K miles and was still good for another 10-15 K, the reason for replacement is the tread is wearing quite flat across the tire and it was becoming noticeable in the curves as it took a bit more steering to hold a line.
I think the Ziex 512 (and others like it in tread design) would be a suitable tire if it didn't have that big void that runs through the outer two inches if thread.
The fewer the voids and the wider the outer portion of the treads (as un-interrupted as possible) is the best possible combination.....IMHO... coolsmiley coolsmiley

I don't like the Altimax pictured below for the same reason of too much voids.....maybe 30-40% of the outer two inches of tread is "not tread".
When cornering, why would you want large amounts of void in the two inches of tread you are running on.... crazy2

Because the tire is inexpensive, handles well, and has a long tread life.  I have over 25,000 miles on mine (although the photos below were taken after about 15,000 miles).

The Falken Ziex 512 in 205 65 16 I recently replaced just missed 24000 miles and in all those miles rain-dry-twisties-it never ONCE exhibited any side slip what so ever. RIDE SAFE.

Actually the Definity compared to the Falken side by side at Pep Boys. The Definity has more of the rounded shoulder and aggressive tread pattern . Dosent look like it in the pics above. BUT that is why I posted, I appreciate the opinions here.

If you have already run a car tire on the rear you know a few things.

Namely, that the edge profiles have very little to no influence of the handling characteristics of the ride.

If you have never ridden darkside, I would suggest to stop considering running that way if your main

concern is trying to find a car tire with nice round edges.

You should stay with a motorcycle tire. The taxi tire is about the same dollars so keep with the motorcycle tires.

Know that all car tires running on the Valkyrie will wear out in the center of the tread, regardless of pressure.

I ride a car tires because the car tires are cheap and I get a lot of miles from them.

I pick a car tire based on how brute macho the tire looks and limit that selection to my wallet.

I have run quite  few car tires and have no favorite. They all ride the same and yield the same results.

BigM, didn't mean no insults to your tire choice.  I like the 2 that I like because they have a directional tread.  I also like the pattern and think that the tread near the edge provides excellent wet weather riding.

Rio Wil, I haven't felt any sliding with the Falken, but see what you are talking about the tread near the sidewall.  Like you, I change my rear before they are worn out for the same or different reasons.  I swapped out my last Falken at 17,600 miles, because I was going on a 4,000 mile trip and didn't want any trouble from the rear tire out on the road.

My first DS tire was a Goodyear Triple Tread.  THAT tire was pretty flat and I didn't like the way it handled near as much as my current Falken.

All good discussion guys....

Right. I ran the Goodyear also and and the shoulders were to sq. Didnt like the way it handled. Running the 55 hankook and is great. But now looking for a 60. Reason was looking at one with the rounded shoulders.
