I have a 97 tourer with about 56,000 miles on it and I am in the process of taking the original petcock valve off and putting the new Pingle on. While trying to put the phillips head screw driver into the valve lever I found that it was full of dirt. Dirt dobber I guess. While trying to get the dirt out I think I have ruined the phillips head bolt and can't get the phillips head screw driver to bite so I can unsrew the bolt. Question......is there another way to get the valve lever out so I can remove the tank and install the Pingle. Weird quetion, I have a unique way of making something hard that should be easy. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. elliott

If the bike has the original tool kit try the screw drivers in the kit.

Those mud dobbers sure find the damnedest places. TW flush the area wish a few good blasts of water and then take a flashlight and look in opening and see what that screw head looks like. That screw can be hard to engage even when it's in good shape. Make sure your screw driver is not to large. FWIW

You guys are really good. I have had the bike for about 14 years and did still have the original tool kit , I actually forgot that I had it. I found the phillips head screw driver and it fit and I was able to get the bolt out, of course I did have to talk to it just right. I went to church this morning but probably need to go back for another dose. Thanks again for the help. This board is great.

Glad it worked the screws are different than a Phillips.
If your familar with HDL look up the Tool Kit they are not cheap if still available.

The "Phillips" screws on our bikes are actually JIS. If you take a look at the driver in the tool kit you can pretty much take a standard Phillips and duplicate it to some extent by grinding off a little of the tip. Go a little at a time and insert it into a JIS screw and check the depth and feel of engagement until you have it right. Of course, you can buy JIS drivers too..............

Use a JIS screwdriver - short for - Japanese Industrial
Made for these screws, makes a world of difference in proper fitting and fighting with the screw head. It is like night and day in removing these types of screws. Well worth getting a set if you are going to work on metric bikes. The alternative is just what you are going through and not eveyone carries them and lots of tool places do not know they exist.

Thanks for all of your help. That was a frustrating experience. I am just barely a shade tree mechanic and I didn't know there was a such thing as JIS drivers. Thanks again and I am on to the next project. I am getting old as dirt but still having fun with my valk.

Hey Fred, I assume you got the #8771 3 piece "motorcycle" set? Is it the #1 that is the same size as the one in the OEM toolkit, that fits the brake/clutch fluid reservoir covers? Do you think you'll actually use the #2 & #3 screwdrivers?

This is TW again. I just took the tank off and took the fuel line off as well. I took the vacuum line off the OEM petcock and the Pingle only has a place for the fuel line. Where does the vacuum line go?? Thanks in advance.

I haven't touched a Pingle the one you have must be a manual. Plug the line or remove/shorten and plug the other end/fitting.

That vacuum line gets shortened and plugged. Don't leave it open.

I thought about it later and it hit me that this is a manual pingle therefore it doesn't need a vacuum. I will plug it since it would suck debris. While I have the tank off I will clean the air filter. I have a K&N filter and I don't know if it has to be replaced or if it can be cleaned and re-used. Should I replace it? Once again I appreciate the help. Since I am not a mechanic this has been an experience......but fun, especially if it runs when I get through.

The K&N filter probably does not need you to do anything, but if you want to clean it, you should get the K&N cleaning kit to do it.
You can ruin the filter pretty easily so it's best to treat it properly.

Ricky - D I appreciate the reply. I think I will wait to do the filter if it isn't a big problem because I still get 32 mpg or so and that is about what it has always gotten . I do have another question.....I am installing the Pingel and I took the OEM petcock out . My new Pingel has a screen on it for a filter I guess. Only problem ..it wont fit into the hole with the screen on it. Are you supposed to take the screen off? I just assumed it was a filter. It looks like a plastic bushing in the pipe where the OEM petcock was and that keeps the new Pingel from going into the pipe. What do you think?

Sounds like the screen from the OEM petcock stayed in the tank. If so, the pingle won't go in. You should be able to pull the old one out with a pair of needle nose pliers. You will likely destroy it. Your reserve will also be less with the Pingle unless you lengthen the tube. Would be a good time to flush the tank while the petcock is out. Stan

You were exactly right. I got my needle nose pliers and tugged on it a few times and it was done. The original screen is longer than the one on the new Pingel. Thanks for you help. Hope to have it on the rode tomorrow or Wednesday.
