While riding up north on the Taconic with my son yesterday afternoon, we came upon a couple on the side of the road and he was squatting around the engine area of his 1100 V-Star. I pulled over on the narrow shoulder and instructed my son to climb over the guard rail and hang out up on a hill away from the road. I walked over and offered some help. He said it just stopped running. I assessed the symptoms as he described...filling up about 20 minutes before, making sure the petcock was set to run, kickstand up. I then asked him to open the gas cap. He assured me that he had gas. I asked him again and, again he assured me. I told him to humor me. as soon ans he turned the key and pulled up a little, the "WHOOOSH" was heard. I told him to start the bike now and he did...and it fired right up. Told him his vent tube was either kinked or blocked.
This is the exact same thing that happened to me when my Valkyrie was about 10 miles old. Started home from the dealership when she felt like she was hitting reserve, and she konked right out. I tried everything I could think of and then I checked the gas tank even though the dealer said he filled it and got the whoosh. But, I didn't take note of it as being abnormal. It konked out several more times on the way home and I would go through everything again, thinking that one or and combination of the things I was doing was working. Immediately posted on this website when I got home and had the answer by the time I woke up the next morning. Kinked vent tube.
Knowledge is good sometimes.
