Hardwick NJ

« on: December 23, 2013, 04:14:30 PM »

my problem started at the end of the Fall color ride, i was riding my new to me Interstate that i had bought early this year and after spending a week before the ride in the NC,TN mountains with Rick(flask) i started to hear a sort of clunk coming from the left side when i applied the rear brake thought it was something with the brake boy was i wrong!!!!
This is what i found today after tearing down for winter maintenance.

The whole where axle goes through is a little oblong do you think it would be alright?

My 99IS did the same at 28K.  I went with the bearing upgrade and machined spacer on the left side and relaced both sides,  Did a rear end service and replaced the other side bearing and seals too.  MAy as well do the rear brakes while yer at it.
If you decide to go tht route, you will hve heavy duty bearings both sides.

You can get the spacer from Bill ( Grumpy ) and do the double row mod . I've got it on all my bikes and hope I never have another rear bearing issue.

I recently had the same issue with just the outer race stuck in the wheel. Yuk! I had to resort to using a Dremel with a fiber-reinforced disc to cut through the outer race. I took quite a few slices and persuading with a hammer and chisel before the race gave it up. I probably made six different cuts and chinked out the material in between. I didn't want to cut completely through the race because I'd have been cutting into the wheel itself. All that cutting and I only used one fiber reinforced disc. Pretty amazing.

I heated the aluminum hub with a propane torch......soft flame.  Then I rubbed an ice cube on the race.......it fell right out.

Merry Christmas!!!!!! Cheesy

I had the same thing happen to my rear wheel bearing.  I had someone else do it since I was not comfortable with the level of my skills.  Cutting the race out left only a small scar on the wheel and has had no negative result in many, many thousands of miles.

That very pain was felt for me last summer on my "July and let's try to avoid Death Valley and hang in Mammoth Lakes" ride! Middle of nowhere and bearing starts singing a (not) happy tune! sigh!
