Hello ,

I have a lot of gardenmachines (besides of my Lady.. Cheesy) and I wanted to purchase a tachometer to see the rpm's of my chainsaws at full throttle.

In the shopmanual of the Lady I have read how to adjust the stationary screws on our carburators - you have to start with 1 carb and turn till rpm drops with 40 rpm, then turn back the screw x-turns etc.etc.

Does anyone has done this from the manual (now I have turned the screws all 6 out 2 1/4turns according to Patrick's indications)

When I see the types of tachometers they speek of a type that is also designed for engines with direct ignition - see OPPAMA type PET 1200 - are our engines with direct ignition or not. I know they have ignition coils that give the current for the Sparks , is it this what they call : direct ignition...??

For my lawnmower and chainsaws I will not need this, here the spark comes from a magnetic piece that is placed at the flywheel. An ordinary tachometer for such machines will it work to measure the rpm on our beast??

Kind regards,
Flatsix

Nowadays when they talk about "direct ignition", they are referring to new style automobile engines

where the coil is mounted singularly on each cylinder.

With that definition, the Valkyrie does not have "direct ignition"

Thank you Ricky D for your clear answer - so I can buy a "normal" tachometer.  Roll Eyes

Does anyone has tried the procedure that is described in the shop manual about setting the idle mixture screw by using a separate tachometer?

I just screwed tem all 6 out 2,1/4 turns , as advised on this forum.

If you have experience with the Honda-procedure, please advise.  Smiley

An additional tachometer is recommended because one is needed that is more sensitive and has a better scale for clear more precise reading.

You will need a fan that can keep the motor cool enough so that the radiator fan will not energize. The radiator fan going "off" and "on" will disrupt the tuning process and yield less accurate results.

The carburetors should be synchronized prior to attempting to adjust the pilot screws.

There are four venturi outlets in each carburetor throat  that are supplied by the idle jet.  The pilot needle controls the flow through only one of the venturi outlets, and is the one that is closest to the intake runner. The outlet is almost exactly above the idle needle.
